The Ember Mug 2 is the ‘Secret weapon in the art of perfectly heated sips’

The idea of making a coffee only to get busy and it going cold gives me anxiety. Sure, it’s summer and the ice latte isn’t going out of fashion. But I’m in Melbourne, and most mornings are still cold and grey.

Thankfully, I no longer need to worry about lukewarm coffee. I have a new companion joining me in the quest against borderline depressing brews: the Ember Mug 2.

The Ember Mug is available in a variety of colours.

This isn’t just a mug, this is my knight in shining armour; keeping me warm throughout the mornings and into the afternoon.

(If you haven’t worked it out by now, I really like this mug.)

What is the Ember Mug?

The Ember Mug is a high-tech cup that heats and regulates the temperature of your desired beverage.

It doesn’t just keep your coffee or tea warm, it’s a secret weapon in the art of perfectly heated sips, up to 62.5°C.

Visually, she’s stunning. Stainless steel body and handle, with an LED indicator. Think of this light as your in-game HUD, signaling when your beverage has hit the sweet spot.

From 25°C, it took just 7 minutes to bring my coffee up to 60°C. I nursed that baby for as long as I could. Over an hour later she was still sitting comfortably on 60 degrees.

Trying it the opposite way was a failure. I just wanted to see how long it would take to go from 60 degrees back down to 54. This mug is made to keep your coffee hot, so as you’d expect, it took a long time to come down to temperature.

Despite its metal body, it’s well insulated and I never found the mug itself to get too hot. The liquid inside may have been steaming, but you’re in safe hands.

The built-in battery is your lifeline, lasting up to 1.5 hours, or go infinite by placing it on the charging coaster. It’s not the highest-capacity battery out there, but it’s pumping a lot of heat.

The cleaning phase is a breeze – Ember Mug 2 is surprisingly submersible up to 1 meter. I often find a quick rinse and wipe out is more than sufficient, especially if I’m going to have another coffee in an hour anyway.

Ember App

To start your hot coffee journey, you’ll need the Ember app.

The app lets you create and customise drink presets, enabling you to create your perfect brew.

The Ember app pairs with your mug and Apple Watch to track caffeine and heart rate data.

It also works with Apple’s Health app – a neat feature for the health-conscious. Available on both Apple and Android, with smartwatch apps for on-the-go control.

The Apple Watch companion app can notify you when your mug reaches the desired temperature.

I personally have a shameful caffeine addiction and don’t want to be bullied by Apple.

The app also allows you to pair multiple devices, adjust the temperature and change the colour of the mug’s LED.

It’s pretty simple to use, with a slider along the bottom of the app screen to adjust the temperature. I found the mug would connect to my phone via Bluetooth in just seconds.

What’s in the box?

It’s a premium unboxing experience.

International adapters are included in the box.

Inside the Ember Mug packaging; a charging pad, and cable. International plugs and, of course, the Ember Mug 2 295ml.

The Perfect Mug?

My first gripe is that the mug doesn’t have a USB charger, it utilises a wall adapter. Given it’s designed to be a desk companion, I’d love to see a USB-C version in the future.

The other downside to this beautiful piece of technology is its price tag. The 296ml Mug goes for just under $200 from JB HI-FI. Though, it’s hard to put a price on consistently warm coffee.

While the battery adds a bit of bulk, the stainless steel design feels great to drink from, it’s not too heavy and — as mentioned — is a breeze to clean.

I’ve officially found my favourite mug. No more cold coffee – just perfectly warmed sips to fuel my epic, hours-long gaming (and writing) adventures… That is after I pry it from my partner’s hands.
