Hands-On With Hasbro’s New Kyber Core Lightsaber Forge Range

For years, Hasbro’s Lightsaber Forge series has been a beloved staple for young Jedi and Sith alike, offering replica sabers and customisable iconic weapons from the Star Wars universe.

Now, they’ve taken it a step further with their latest innovation: the Kyber Core range. This new collection features transparent hilts and blades, inspired by the recent additions to the Star Wars fandom.

Sabine Wren’s lightsaber is featured in the new Kyber Core Lightsaber Forge range.

The Kyber Core Range shines a spotlight on fan-favorite characters such as Ahsoka Tano, Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader and Sabine Wren, aiming to captivate the imaginations of both children and adult fans.

Hasbro kindly sent me three sabers from the new range to review: Darth Vader’s, Sabine Wren’s, and the legendary Darksaber – now wielded by Bo-Katan Kryze.

One of the standout features of the Kyber Core Range is the ability to swap the blade, cap, cover, and core, allowing for wide customisation options to create your perfect lightsaber. This aspect is particularly appealing, even for someone like me who had initially been skeptical about the Lightsaber Forge series due to the non-retractable blades.

After experiencing the Kyber Core sabers myself, I can see how they resonate with younger audiences and the young at heart.

Pulling apart the lightsabers to create your own is the most enjoyable experience.

How does the new Kyber Core range feel?

The Kyber Core Range is fully compatible with the entire Lightsaber Forge line — now that’s pod racing! The sabers feel great in hand, and the inclusion of motion-activated sound effects and clashing effects adds a layer of immersive play (not so much for my cat).

The Darksaber features its own unique sound set, while Darth Vader’s and Sabine’s sabers share the same sound effects.

While there are many aspects I appreciate about the Lightsaber Forge series, there are a few areas where it falls short. My main issue lies with the brightness and consistency of the light through the blade.

Each saber emits light, but it can appear uneven at times. It also oddly shines out of the top of the saber, creating unusual lighting patterns on the walls. Though, my kids didn’t seem to care…

The safety holes (what I assume they are) open the end of the blade to emit an odd light on the saber’s surroundings.

Is the new Kyber Core range worth it?

For a $39 lightsaber, the Kyber Core series ticks many boxes, but I’d have hoped at that price that batteries would be included – each saber requires 2 x AAA batteries (something to keep in mind when purchasing).

The lightsabers are very sturdy and can take a beating, making them ideal for lightsaber battles at home. I’m surprised, given how hard the kids were clashing, that there wasn’t so much as a dent in the blades.

There are many more designs on the way, including sabers from the latest Star Wars series, The Acolyte. The Lightsaber Forge Kyber Core range is available at leading retailers including Big W, Kmart, Target, and all major toy stores.

Whether you’re a seasoned Star Wars fan or new to the galaxy far, far away, the Kyber Core sabers are sure to satisfy your inner Sith or Jedi needs.
