Fortnite’s latest addition isn’t just a skin or an emote — it’s an AI-powered, fully conversational Darth Vader. And yes, he sounds exactly like James Earl Jones — smooth, thunderous, and dripping with nostalgia. But for the industry, it’s ruffling a whole lot of feathers…
Once recruited (assuming you beat the crowd racing to do the same), Vader follows you like any other Fortnite companion — except this one will converse.

Using the game’s voice chat, you can ask Vader anything and he’ll reply. Ask about the Force, the Empire, or sand — he’ll have thoughts (cue the Imperial propaganda). Want him to recite a cookie recipe? He’ll do it — menacingly. Sing a Disney song? Maybe, if it aligns with Sith strategy.
The result? Equal parts impressive, chaotic, and deeply funny.
Naturally, the internet did what it does best. Within hours, players had Fortnite AI Vader saying the most cursed things imaginable. Epic patched it fast — but not before the clips went viral. A reminder: AI may be powerful, but gamers will always hit the chaos button.

As fun as it is, there’s a far bigger conversation here: AI ethics and creative labour in games. SAG-AFTRA, the American screen actors union, has filed a complaint against Epic Games, arguing AI shouldn’t replace human performers without proper negotiation.
That said, it’s been reported that James Earl Jones’ estate authorised the use of his voice.

But how’s this all been received by players? Judging by the reaction, this might be Fortnite’s most entertaining move in years.
For me, it’s a refreshing use of AI. Remember when we thought it would take over the world? Meanwhile, I can barely get it to write a coherent email. But here’s a use case that actually lands — maybe a glimpse into the future of interactive storytelling?
If this is where games are headed, I welcome our new Sith overlord.
But don’t take my word for it.
I asked Vader: “Is this the future of gaming?”
He replied, in full Sith disdain: “You dare waste my time with such trivial prophecy?”
Which, I think, is Sith for “absolutely.”
