Review | Star Wars Outlaws: A Pirate’s Fortune DLC (PlayStation 5)

After recently basking in the joys of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew with my family, the idea of Star Wars Outlaws: A Pirate’s Fortune — a pirate adventure — had me pumped. And teaming up with the legendary Hondo Ohnaka? Say no more.

I adore how much Hondo has become a central part of the Star Wars universe. A lowly pirate desperate for survival, scraping by and pulling off the impossible — Jedi and heroes often by his side.

Disneyland’s Smuggler’s Run has Hondo front and centre, and The Clone Wars and Rebels make him one of the series’ most memorable anti-heroes. Now, he’s featuring in the newest DLC for Star Wars Outlaws — it put a big smile on this nerd’s face.

Treasure, you say?

A Pirate’s Fortune introduces a new region — the Khepi system. While there aren’t any new planets, there’s asteroid fields, a space station, and a hidden pirate lair make up for it. There are also plenty of new threats lurking in the nebula.

A lot has changed since Wild Card released last November — all for the better — with updates and patches refining the overall experience.

Swinging around a pirate treasure trove.

Minors Spoilers Ahead

Right after jumping back into the game, ND-5 radios in: “Kay, there’s some kind of beeping in the ship.”

That beeping turns out to be a hidden message — a transmission from Hondo Ohnaka to an old contact. He’s onto a big score — treasure on a grand scale — and despite the obvious red flags, we’re (obviously) going to investigate.

Who could it be!?

The Treasure Hunt Begins

First stop: Akiva, the rainforest planet.

Touching down, I jump on Kay’s speeder and head toward Imperial-controlled Research Station 57 — a familiar location.

All around me are familiar places…

Infiltrating an old Imperial outpost wasn’t exactly thrilling — I’d 100% been here and cleared this place before — but soon we’re off to a secluded island on the lake, searching for the first clue to the treasure.

Hot tip: The map isn’t on the same island where you find the clue. Believe me — I wasted too much time checking under nearby palm trees for nothing.

Somehow, a Rise of Skywalker reference has returned.

At least I found an interesting datapad referencing Ochi of Bestoon, the bounty hunter from The Rise of Skywalker who had the infamous dagger map.

Then comes the real adventure — jumping to Mysterious Coordinates.

Zooming around the Khepi system.

After being ripped out of hyperspace, Kay and ND-5 find themselves navigating a dangerous nebula, overwhelming them with electrical fields. It’s an incredible visual — the eerie glow surrounding the hidden pirate hideout sets the tone.

Not long after, The Trailblazer gets boarded by space pirates; Kay is captured and thrown into a dark prison cell. Thankfully, she’s not alone.

Enter Hondo Ohnaka.

Hondo Ohnaka in all his glory.

Stripped of Kay’s tools and weapons, escape isn’t a simple shootout. I have to be strategic.

Sneaking through the pirate hideout, deep in the nebula, was tense but satisfying. Without the usual gear, I had to rely on quick thinking rather than brute force — at least until things inevitably turned into a firefight.

Hey, R5-P8! Pls don’t kill me.

Once free, the story takes a bit of a fetch-quest detour. If not for Hondo’s presence, it might have felt like a standard side mission. But landing on Tatooine, exploring Hondo’s old base, and finally taking to the stars again? That’s when A Pirate’s Fortune really hit its stride.

Space Combat Feels Fresh

Kay gets to pilot an all-new ship, and suddenly space combat feels fantastic. It’s fast and nimble, letting you whip around enemies with ease. This really took me by surprise and elevated the entire DLC experience.

The ship features two flight modes — each with its own weapons and mechanics.

Flying around in a fancy new ship.

After completing the DLC, a similar ship becomes available for further exploration of the Khepi system, unlocking new missions and challenges. There’s plenty of extra content for players to enjoy, though it’s all in a similar vein to what’s already available.

Is A Pirate’s Fortune Worth Jumping Back Into Outlaws For?

Overall, A Pirate’s Fortune is a fun, engaging expansion that that feels even better thanks to nearly a year of updates and polish to Outlaws. While it doesn’t reinvent the game, it adds meaningful depth to Kay Vess’ journey. Initially, I questioned whether this new quest was true to the Kay Vess’ character, but it all unravelled nicely.

The treasure hunt and Hondo’s antics are clear highlights, but the real charm lies in the evolving bond between Kay and ND-5. It’s proof that Outlaws has only gotten better with time — and this adventure is a great reason to jump back in. For $23, it’s a worthy investment for any Star Wars Outlaws fan.
