Video games releasing in August 2025

August is packed with exciting games, though many of the ‘big-hitters’ are set to release in the tail end of the month; Gears of War: Reloaded, METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER, Shinobi: Art of Vengeance, and Lost Soul Aside are all dropping within days of each other. There are some hard choices ahead gamers.

Here are our most anticipated games releasing in August 2025:

Mafia: The Old Country

After almost ten years between drinks, the Mafia series is back with Mafia: The Old Country, a prequel to the original Mafia. Set in 1900s Sicily, this new game follows Enzo Favara as he works his way up the ranks of the Torrisi crime family.

The third-person action-adventure tells a classic tale of family, loyalty, and organised crime. Wield weapons like the deadly stiletto blade, a sawed-off shotgun that packs a punch, and more as you run protection rackets and engage in turf wars with rival families.

Join the family when Mafia: The Old Country releases on August 8th for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Sword of the Sea

Sword of the Sea turns the vibes up to 11 in what could be described as Cool Boarders meets Journey. Surf on your hover-sword across a desolate sea of sand, popping gnarly flips and tricks as you explore ancient ruins. You’ll gradually uncover a long-dormant sea under the dunes, restoring water and life to the land.

The games’ Director Matt Nava previously served as Art Director on Journey before co-founding Giant Squid and directing both ABZÛ and The Pathless. Sword of the Sea looks to be a culmination of ideas from its predecessors, creating a Zen-like atmospheric adventure filled with magical sea life and the high-speed traversal of surfing.

Drop in to Sword of the Sea on August 20th for PlayStation 5 and PC. The game will also be on PlayStation Plus Extra at launch.

Gears of War: Reloaded

Relive the beginnings of the Gears series in Gears of War: Reloaded, a faithful remaster packed with visual and performance improvements. Join Marcus Fenix and the gang as they shoot, slash, and explode every grub in sight on their mission to defeat the Locust Horde.

Reloaded will be the first time the Gears series has made its way over to PlayStation and will support cross-play across all platforms in both campaign co-op and versus multiplayer modes.

Get locked n’ loaded when Gears of War: Reloaded hits Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC on August 27th.

METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER

Snake? Snaaaaake! It’s been ten years since the last Metal Gear game (Metal Gear Survive doesn’t count!) and while METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER isn’t an all-new game, it’s still good to see the bandana toting hero back on our screens. Keeping the same gripping story, characters, voice acting, and core experience that made it so beloved, but with all new graphics and gameplay enhancements that bring it into the modern age.

A remake of METAL GEAR SOLID 3: SNAKE EATER, chronologically Δ (or Delta) is the first game in the series, making it the perfect entry point for a new generation of action-espionage fans. I can only imagine that Konami has plans to remake the entire series.

METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER sneaks onto PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on August 28th.

Shinobi: Art of Vengeance

Shinobi: Art of Vengeance sees the return of the series’ original protagonist Joe Musashi on his quest of vengeance against a supernatural evil. The stunning hand-drawn art style is worth the price of admission alone, with its slick traversal, dynamic backgrounds, and badass combat animations. There’s over a dozen unique locations to flex your platforming prowess and plenty of weapons and ninjutsu in your arsenal to take on enemies in fast and furious combat.

With Shinobi: Art of Vengeance, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, and Ninja Gaiden 4 (later this year), it really is well and truly the year of the ninja!

Shinobi: Art of Vengeance triple-somersaults onto consoles and PC on August 29th. There’s also a demo available on PlayStation and Switch now!

Lost Soul Aside

Revealed back in 2016, what started as a solo project now has a team of forty and the backing of PlayStation. Lost Soul Aside is finally set to release this month. The Action-RPG follows Kaser and his dragon-like creature Arena on their quest to save Kaser’s sister from other-wordly beings.

The game is championing fast, high-octane, dynamic combat. You’ll utilise dozens of weapons, abilities, and combos to defeat relentless enemies and colossal bosses. While combat looks tough, the game is a character-action and not a souls-like, think Devil May Cry or Stellar Blade. It also looks fantastic with jaw-dropping traversal and combat animations, excellent enemy design, and stunning backdrops.

Get your action-fix. Lost Soul Aside releases on the 30th of August for PlayStation 5 and PC.
