Cult classic, choose-your-own-adventure game Until Dawn is turning ten next year. To celebrate, fans have been gifted news that it’s being turned into a movie!
More excitingly, Supermassive Games — the team behind the game — is overseeing the adaptation and it is set to be directed by David F. Sandberg (Shazam, Lights Out, Annabelle Creation).

Screenplay was originally written by Blair Butler, known for her writing of the 2022 thriller film The Invitation. Now, Gary Dauberman is overlooking the next draft. And with a portfolio including Annabelle, The Nun and It, an atmosphere of horror genius is brewing.
Dare I say, Until Dawn is in great horror hands.
Playstation Productions has been churning out video game adaptations that are sending fans wild, most recently HBO’s The Last of Us series.

Can Playstation Productions continue their winning streak with Until Dawn?
The film is looking to be R-rated, so we can only assume it’ll have some gory special effects, much like the game. Nothing has been revealed in the way of plot or characters, but we do know it’ll be an ensemble cast.

What is Until Dawn?
Until Dawn is a decision based horror video game that sees your characters survive, or die a horrible death. It’s up to you!
The player chooses the fate of eight main characters. Set in the fictional Blackwood Mountain, a group of 10 friends share a weekend away. Tragedy strikes when two of the friends, sisters Beth and Hannah, fall to their death.

A year later the friends return to heal, relax and have fun. None of which happens, as the gang are hunted by a bloodthirsty psychopath. The player must make the ‘right decisions’ to keep all eight players alive until dawn breaks and rescue comes.
As a big fan of Until Dawn and the horror genre, the movie production team has me pumped. Video game adaptations are becoming more common, with the likes of Super Mario Bros, Sonic, Detective Pikachu, Gran Turismo, Tomb Raider and Uncharted — just to name a few.

Why not blend the world between game and film to create a narrative that transcends just one platform? It’s just more ways to enjoy my favourite games, I say.
No release date has been set, however good things take time, so we’re in for the long haul.
I’ll wait over here under the covers, replaying Until Dawn over and over until then.
