‘Escape from Ever After’ is More Than a Paper-Thin Fairytale

After catching a glimpse during last week’s Indie Quest Showcase, Escape from Ever After immediately unfolded as one of the most exciting games on the horizon. With stunning visuals that feel straight out of a storybook, and a clear Paper Mario influence, it looks like a twisted fairytale adventure in all the right ways.

You play as Flynt Buckler, a classic hero plucked from the pages of your favourite childhood tales. But things have taken a corporate turn. Ever After Inc., a greedy megacorporation, has found a way into the storybooks, exploiting their magic, characters and charm for cheap labour and maximum profit.

To save the stories, you’ll team up with your old nemesis Tinder the Dragon — a fiery reunion! The trailer highlights a variety of storybook realms, each with its own genre twist. From spooky Lovecraftian horror to gritty film noir, this narrative playground looks to have plenty of surprises coming.

A fiery date with your old nemesis Tinder…

Combat seems to take a cue from Paper Mario, blending turn-based strategy with mini-games that reward well-timed button presses. I’m hoping for lots of quirky abilities — there’s a healthy dose of creativity on show as Flynt Buckler paper-punches his way through corporate cronies and fairytale foes.

Classic Paper Mario battle mechanics await.

Escape from Ever After is heading to PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox and PlayStation 5 in late 2025. If you enjoy witty writing, genre-shifting worlds and adventures that don’t fold under pressure, this is one to add to your wishlist.
