Ghost of Yōtei: All Weapon Locations

As Atsu in Ghost of Yōtei, you’re hell-bent on avenging your family, slain at the hands of the Yōtei Six. As the name implies, there are six deadly killers on your hit list, and to put them all six feet under, you’re going to need more weapons than Neo in The Matrix.

Luckily, Yōtei has a whole arsenal of sharp, stabby objects to get the job done. Some you’ll get along the golden story path of the game, others require a bit more hunting to find.

Here are all the weapons in Ghost of Yōtei and where to find them (SPOILERS AHEAD):

Yōtei Grasslands

Katana

Katana.

The Katana — or ‘Wolf Blade’ as it’s named in the game — is your starting weapon. Reliable. Deadly. It’s your most precious possession. Most effective against other katana, you’ll want to upgrade this one early for all those duels with wanted outlaws, ronin, and the Six themselves… Also, there’s nothing more badass than a katana.

Hankyu and Yumi

Hankyu.

The two bows in the game — the Hankyu and the Yumi — can be purchased from Ran The Bowyer at Yōtei’s Shadow Inn. You’ll head to inn naturally as part of the story so these ones are hard to miss.

The Hankyu is a medium sized bow that you can draw and fire quickly, good for peppering your foe with arrows. Not great against an enemy in a helmet, but fire and poison arrows give the bow more versatility… And also make it more fun to use, of course.

The Yumi is expensive early on, but the longbow is worth saving you coin for. It functions more like a sniper compared to it’s shorter counterpart, with massive range and zoom while aiming. It’s slow to draw and reload, but can pierce through armour as if it were rice paper.

Dual Katana

Dual Katana.

The Dual Katana — my personal favourite weapons in the game — can be acquired from Hanbei, the one-armed swordsman… Well they do say those that can’t do, teach. You can find him in the very east of the Grasslands; follow the ‘Yōtei Trailhead’ all the way up Mount Yōtei for a Rocky inspired training montage from Master Hanbei.

Dual katana attacks are much quicker than when you’re just wielding one, trading power for speed; they’re most affective against long spear-type weapons like the yari and naginata.

While two heads are better than one, the same doesn’t apply to dual katana. When facing an enemy with a single katana, their increased strength from the two handed grip will break through your attacks easily… Best to switch back to the mono-katana and meet them on an equal footing.

Metsubushi

Metsubushi.

If you can’t see, you can’t fight; the Metsubushi is a shinobi tool that sprays blinding powder in your enemy’s face. Most useful in a 1v1 dual when you want to disrupt an attack, or sneak one in yourself.

Just north of where you got the dual katana (along the western edge of the Grasslands map) is ‘The Blue-Flowered Cemetery’. Here you’ll find Crow Genzo, an assassin for the Yōtei Six. Defeat him in a duel to obtain both the metsubushi and the bounty on his head.

Ishikari Plain

Yari

Yari.

Once you make it to Ishikari Plain, you can obtain the Yari; a bladed-polearm that’s effective against dual kama and kusarigama. Head due east from ‘Ishikari Market’ to find the island hideout of Sensei Takahashi, who will school you in the art of the yari.

The yari is strong against sickles, great for keeping groups of enemies at a manageable distance, and can even be used to launch a powerful ‘Typhoon Kick’ that sends foes flying.

Bombs

Bombs.

Bomb make big boom, pretty simple. Another ranged weapon, with types like the Scorch Bomb that erupts in a massive fiery explosion, and the Blind Bomb which works like a flashbang to blind enemies.

Seek out Ina the Bomb Maker at her camp in the ‘Otaru Hills’, located in the very south of the region, not far from the ‘Nishin Fishery’.

Oni’s Flame

Oni’s Flame.

The Oni’s Flame is a consumable that bathes your melee weapon in flames, causing your attacks to become unblockable for a short period of time. It not only looks metal as hell, but the oil is super handy for getting the upper hand in a duel.

You’ll need to get through the main story quests in the Ishikari Plain before you can finally obtain the Oni’s Flame from Mad Goro, who can be found at the ‘Azure Wind Shrine’ in the very north of the region just past ‘Jigoku Fortress’.

Tokachi Range

Ōdachi

Ōdachi.

If you just can’t wait to get your hands on this beast of a sword, then you’ll need to head to Tokachi Range and track down the Ōdachi Master, Yoshida. You’ll find him at his dojo in ‘Horosaru Falls’, due north of the ‘Huranui’s Rest Inn’.

The Ōdachi is big, powerful and nigh unstoppable in motion — though as you might surmise, it’s slow to get going — and cuts through big brute enemies like a hot knife through butter. While you can’t wield in one hand like Sephiroth does in Final Fantasy VII, you can feel just as badass swinging around a sword that’s as long as you are tall!

Nayoro Wilds

Charm of True Aim

Yumi.

Okay, while it’s not TECHNICALLY a weapon, it is the best charm in the game in my opinion, and turns an already useful weapon into an overpowered death-dealer. The Charm of True Aim allows the Yumi bow to lock-on to up to three enemies at once, delivering one-hit-kills to regular enemies — strong bounties and bosses will take massive damage, but won’t be so easily downed. The attack does use three arrows though, so you’ll need to be strategic about where you use it.

In the ‘Nayoro Wilds’ you’ll find a storyteller at the ‘Husko Kotan’. Listen to her story to activate the quest and follow it through to the end to obtain the charm. Happy hunting.

Teshio Ridge

Kusarigama

Kusarigama.

After making your way through Tokachi Range, you’ll arrive at Teshio Ridge, home of Master Enomoto, an expert in the Kusarigama. Head due north from the ‘Red Crane Inn’… A LONG way north, and you’ll find him in his dojo.

The Kusarigama is a weapon made up of a sharp sickle, called a kama, and a counterweight attached by a chain. Atsu can flail the weighted end around, smashing enemy shields and skulls, before moving in to finish the job with the blade end. You can also assassinate enemies from a distance with the ‘Lethal Talons’ special move, dragging them towards you with the blade and chain.

Kunai

Kunai.

The ultimate ninja tool; Kunai can thin a gang of charging raiders, be chained into assassinations, or to inflict major stagger damage during duels. With the right charm, they can even be used to set enemies alight or ignite flammable objects.

You’ll need to help out Hana the Kunai Artist at the ‘Contested Farm’ before you can wield these deadly little throwing daggers. You can find the farm south-east of the ‘Red Crane Inn’ not far from the entrance of ‘Teshio Ridge’ itself.

Smoke Bomb

Smoke Bomb.

Much more than a cheap parlour trick, the Smoke Bomb is an essential tool in the Shinobi’s toolkit. While similar to the metsubushi which blinds a single enemy, the smoke bomb instead obscures you from sight entirely.

If your cover is blown and you have angry soldiers trying to lop your head off, toss down a smoke bomb and sneak off into cover. You can’t perform an assassination on enemies that have already seen you… Unless of course you drop a smoke bomb, then drop your knife into their gut.

You can get your hands on the smoke bomb by working your way through the main story quests in Teshio Ridge, but any more information than that would be a major spoiler.

Oshima Coast

Tanegashima

Tanegashima.

The Tanegashima matchlock rifle is loud and super slow to reload, but makes up for it in range and damage dealt… No armour is stopping a bullet from this thing. You can preload a bullet into the rifle for a quick first shot, but after that it’s better to switch weapons if you’re still being attacked. The gun also has a slight zoom when you gently press down on the trigger, with a full pull firing the shot.

You get the Tanegashima during a story quest that has you travelling to ‘Oshima Coast’ so you can’t rush (or miss) this one.

Tanzutsu

Tanzutsu.

The Tanzutsu is a matchlock pistol that serves a similar purpose to Kunai, quick firing for a swift kill or to deal stagger damage during a duel. You’ll find Matchlock Murata at his workshop, south west of the entrance to the ‘Oshima Coast’; help him with his quests and you’ll be rewarded with the pistol.

Much like your main weapons, the Tanzutsu can be upgraded at Murata’s workshop… If you have the right materials and enough coin that is.
