Preview | BALL x PIT: ‘Shaping up to be one of 2025’s best’

Imagine if Peggle and Vampire Survivors had a chaotic, ball-launching baby — that’s BALL x PIT. Devolver Digital and developer Kenny Sun are launching a brick-breaking, survival roguelite where flying balls, treasure hunting, and base-building collide.

There’s a demo out now and thanks to Devolver Digital, I played it early. In fact, I’ve spent more than three hours playing it — a demo! It could be one of the best indies so far this year.

Ballbylon Has Dropped

Welcome to Ballbylon (cute name), a once-great city reduced to nothing by a mysterious catastrophe. Now, all that’s left is a mega pit full of riches — and ruthless creatures determined to keep them. Your mission is sphere clear — load up on magic-infused balls, smash through waves of enemies, and descend deeper into the abyss.

The more gems you collect, the stronger you get, leveling up your arsenal and unlocking powerful new ball combinations. Using the Wind ball and the Fire ball, I created an Inferno ball.

Inferno ball!

After upgrading the Inferno ball again, I demolished the boss in seconds. So satisfying!

Victory isn’t just about brute force; there’s strategy in crafting ball synergies and optimising your gear to take on the ever-expanding depths.

Once a run is complete, some upgrades stick around permanently, and gold earned lets you enhance your base for even more perks.

Whoa. That’s a lot of space to rebuild.

Though the full base-building experience isn’t available in the demo, there’s still a little space to play with. But zooming out, the full map gives us the ball playground of our dreams.

With over 60 ball types to experiment with, BALL x PIT isn’t just a test of reflexes — it’s a sandbox for creating absurdly powerful ball builds (not a series of words I expected to type today).

The Steam demo is out now, alongside BALL x PIT: The Kenny Sun Story, a short documentary diving into its development — it’s a funny watch. These solo devs (and friends) are super inspiring.

BALL x PIT has no release date yet but we can expect the full game to land on PC, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X|S sometime in this year.
