The reveal of Phantom Blade Zero was a delightful surprise for me during the PlayStation Showcase, second only to Spider-Man 2.
The trailer showed off the games’ dark-fantasy Chinese aesthetic, with combat and enemy design a real highlight.
Phantom Blade Zero is set in a world where Chinese Kungfu, Steampunk and the Dark Occult converge, giving it an intriguing style and setting that’s being dubbed ‘Kungfupunk’.
There’s a special kind of movement and shocking speed to kung-fu that’s hard to capture in a game, Sifu did a great job recently but few others have done it well.
Watching Phantom Blade Zero in the showcase took me back to being a kid, sitting on the couch with my dad watching old kung-fu movies.
It’s forcefully pushed it’s way to the top tier of my most anticipated games list, I can’t wait to get this one in hand to see how it plays.

S-Game, while you may not be familiar with their work, have a decade of experience making mobile games and are bringing that knowledge to this PS5 release.

The developers have cited Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden as inspiration and it shows. Combat is lightning-fast and frenzied, with jaw-dropping attacks and wicked enemy design.

We seem to be getting a lot of announcements for visually stunning Chinese games like this in recent years, Black Myth Wukong, Where Winds Meet and Project: The Perceiver come to mind.
Let’s hope they play as good as they look!
Set to launch on PS5 and PC, Phantom Blade Zero doesn’t have a release date just yet.
