Alongside the usual product mix, MTG Marvel Super Heroes has brought two Scene Boxes to the set, each built around six exclusive, foil borderless cards that line up into one continuous illustration. We opened the Heroes United box, and digging into who’s actually on it turned up something more interesting than the box art itself.

A Team That’s Newer Than It Looks
Heroes United, illustrated by Thanh Tuan, lines up Iron Man, Futurist Paragon, Hulk, Always Angry, Thor, Guardian of Midgard, Black Widow, Intel Expert, Captain America, Unbowed, and Hawkeye, Trick Shot mid-charge.
It reads like a classic Avengers splash page, but this exact six never actually shared a roster during the classic era of the comics. Hulk quit the Avengers back in issue #2 of the original 1963 run, long before Hawkeye or Black Widow ever joined up.
This line-up is entirely the 2012 film’s doing; once Iron Man, Cap, Thor, Hulk, Widow, and Hawkeye became “the” Avengers on screen, the comics quickly leaned into the synergy, officially bringing this exact six-pack together for the first time in the 2012 Avengers Assemble comic series.
Villains Unleashed
The companion box, Villains Unleashed, illustrated by Kieran Yanner, takes the villain side with Ultron, Thanos, M.O.D.O.K., Absorbing Man and Titania, Abomination, and Loki. It’s less a structured team-up and more a premium rogues’ gallery.
While these heavy hitters usually cross paths with the Avengers individually, this line-up heavily channels the energy of classic cross-over events like 1984’s Secret Wars, where the omnipotent Beyonder forcefully threw many of these exact villains — including Ultron, Loki, Absorbing Man, and a newly introduced Titania — into a single faction.
Outside of massive cosmic events, villains usually operate as solo disruptors, which makes seeing them share a single panoramic canvas a rare treat.
From Binder to Desk
Along with the six foil scene cards, each box includes six matching art-only cards for display, a paper easel, and three Play Boosters from the main set.
Ultimately, these aren’t your typical MTG products. Thanks to those included display easels and art cards, Wizards of the Coast clearly designed these to be shown off. Whether you lean toward the MCU-inspired synergy of the heroes or the chaotic, Secret Wars energy of the villains, both boxes offer a unique blend of comic lore.
Both Scene Boxes are available now alongside the wider Marvel Super Heroes release, they retail for around $50 AUD. You can pick them up at your local game store: just make sure you clear some shelf space if you plan on setting up the panorama.
