In lieu of the original’s modern day setting, similar to Shadows, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced tells its modern day story through Animus rifts. These rifts unlock as you progress through the game and tell ‘what if’ scenarios for Edward and his allies.
These rifts, coupled with the collectible Data Files, give you an insight into the goings on outside the animus.

The Animus’ two competing AI agents will flag you with cryptic screen prompts when a rift is available.
We’ve covered the four rifts locations below, so you don’t have to hunt them down yourself!
Rift #1: Wayward Souls
The first rift unlocks after you complete Sequence 4 and can be located on the Southern point of Great Inagua at longitude and latitude 825,429.
The first rift focus’ on a “what if?” scenario for Edward, with extensive parkour sections and simple puzzles. Of the four rifts, this was the slowest. It’s more of a story set up piece.
Rift #2: Wayward Desires
The second rift unlocks after Sequence 8 is completed. It can be found on a small island north of Nassau, located at 604,784
Rift #2 revolves around Black Beard and had the most impressive enviromental design of the four. It gave off some serious Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End vibes. This rift consists mainly of parkour and combat ending in a boss fight.

Rift #3: Wayward Minds
The third rift becomes available after the completion of Sequence 11. You can find this rift on the northern part of Sacrifice Island at 14,559.
Third time around, this rift focuses on Mary Reed and their story. The focus here is more on stealth and I feel it had the most interesting tie in with certain data files.
Rift 4: True Purpose
The final rift is available after you complete the game’s Epilogue. Venture east from the island of Misteriosa to another small island located at 363,176.
The fourth and final rift was by far the best. The focus here is heavily on combat and culminates to one big, final boss fight.
