MTG Marvel Super Heroes: Our favourite cards from the new set

Magic’s Marvel Super Heroes set is out now, and like every crossover set so far, it’s a mixed bag. Thanks to Wizards of the Coast, Quest Daily cracked a handful of fresh packs. Here are some of our favourite pulls from the new set!

Favourite Art: Escape to the Wilds

Alex Ross has made his MTG debut in Marvel Super Heroes, and he hasn’t missed. Escape to the Wilds is the proof. It’s a simple sorcery on paper, dig five and play them with bonus land drop, but this art hits in a big way. If you’re after a Hulk piece for the wall, this is the one.

Honourable mention to Force of Vigor, which we weren’t lucky enough to pull but wish we were!

Best Mechanic: Namor the Sub-Mariner

Namor the Sub-Mariner does exactly what good legendary creatures should: ties its power directly to how you’re building your deck. With power scaling based on your Merfolk count and a token engine triggered by blue noncreature spells, it plays differently depending on the shell you slot it into. It’s the kind of design that rewards building around it rather than simply jamming it into any blue deck.

Pair it with Kindred Discovery naming Merfolk, and every token Namor creates starts drawing you cards whenever it deals combat damage to a player, turning the whole package into a genuine value engine rather than just a big body.

Best Reprint: Rancor

Rancor has been a Standard and EDH staple for years, and putting it on Hulk art is an easy, obvious win. +2/+0 and trample with a built-in safety net if it gets removed, it’s still exactly as efficient as it’s always been. Nice to see a classic get a flavour-accurate new coat of paint instead of just a reskin for the sake of it.

Best Value: Cosmic Cube

Five mana for Ward 2 on an artifact that gives you free spells off the top of your library every combat is a strong rate, and Cosmic Cube has the kind of card advantage potential that’s likely to hold value as the set settles. We featured this one in our pre-release coverage, so it was great to actually pull one out of a pack rather than just write about it.

Best Flavour: Arc Reactor

Arc Reactor isn’t flashy mechanically, just ramp with Improvise that comes in tapped, but the flavour text does the heavy lifting. Tony Stark’s line about borrowed time pairs perfectly with the panel art of the reactor being built, and it’s a nice reminder that the strength of a good crossover set is always in the small details.

Honourable mention to The Astonishing Ant-Man and Wolverine, Fierce Fighter, both worth a look if you’ve pulled them. Ant-Man’s draw-into-tokens engine and Wolverine’s damage-redirect ability are genuinely fun to play around.

Getting Started

If you’re new to the game and the gallery above has you tempted, Marvel Super Heroes also released Jumpstart boosters as part of this release. Grab two, shuffle them together, and you’ve got a ready-made 40-card deck with no deckbuilding required. It’s an easy way to get a feel for the set before committing to a Bundle, Commander Deck or a full booster box.

Marvel Super Heroes is available now at your local game store and major retailers, with Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, and Jumpstart Boosters all on shelves alongside Bundles for anyone wanting a bit of everything in one box. There’s also some Scene Boxes for those looking to put their cards on show.

Whether you’re chasing a Mind Stone or just want a fast, no-fuss way to start playing, there’s something here worth grabbing.
