I’m not sure what it is about me but I tend to enjoy playing games about things I am not so good at IRL (see Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion, by which I mean I am bad with my finances… Not committing tax evasion, please don’t come for me government).
Enter Egging On, a climbing game where players embody a physics-based egg trying to climb to the top of the world (or hen house). You, i.e. the egg, can jump around, but being a lovely ovoid-shape affects your capabilities immensely. So basically what I’m saying is, I’m terrible at physics but I think I can work it out in a video game. Eggcellent.

Going higher means you have farther to fall, and with gravity being merciless, players can splatter into a yolk-y “death”… Well less of a “death” and more of a temporary set-back. When cracked, players become a slippery yolk sliding along the ground, while waiting for the egg shell to regenerate. Being a yolk looks to have a different set of challenges though, as players can slide off platforms or even fall through the cracks in the hen house, and have to start the long climb again.
Players can also find hidden stamps along the way to change the ‘skin’ of their egg. I particularly enjoyed the ‘Fragile’ stamp as seen in the trailer. But once your shell breaks, your collected stamps sadly go as well. Oh, and did I mention there are no checkpoints? Yeah, there are no checkpoints.
It’s giving Catherine – a game I did not manage to finish, much to my to my chagrin, because the levels also got progressively more painful… And it was weird.

Being in a hen house, yes, there are chickens! But these chickens are not at all maternal to their offspring. Going close to them can result in being pecked and flung around, which begs the question – WHY? Do they not recognise their brood?? Maybe I’ll find out when I play it.
No release date yet for Egging On which will only be available on PC, but you can wishlist it on Steam.
