After 30 minutes of hands on time with Final Fantasy VII Remake on the Nintendo Switch 2, I’m here to say it’s (still) a banger — and not just because I got to blow up a reactor.

From the first frames of the train tearing through Midgar, to watching Cloud leap off at the station outside the Sector 1 reactor — it’s a damn fine looking game.
How does Final Fantasy VII Remake run on the Switch 2?
Playing on the Nintendo Switch 2, Final Fantasy VII Remake is running at 1080p and locked at 30fps. That might be a step down from the performance on the PS5 and PC, but locking the frame rate makes the game feel just as smooth.

The first fights through the Sector 1 reactor aren’t the most complicated the game has to offer, but it took me straight back to when I first saw Final Fantasy VII Remake in action — and playing it on a handheld is a delight.

Even on the Nintendo Switch 2’s built-in speakers, the rattle of the train trundling along the tracks and the first swelling orchestral notes of the soundtrack sound spectacular.

If, like me, you’ve played Final Fantasy VII, and then Final Fantasy VII Remake, you likely won’t have to replay it on the Switch 2. But if you’ve never played this reimagining of one of history’s great games, don’t miss this train.
It’s shaping up to be solid port to the console and players will hopefully experience a smooth ride forward.
