Whisper of the House: Uncovering the Alchemist’s Secret

In Whisper of the House, every job comes with hint of mystery. This time, Cheryl (the town’s baker) calls on you for help with a special task: cleaning out her long-lost husband’s house. But this isn’t just any home, it is the workshop of a brilliant — if slightly scatterbrained — alchemist. Years ago, he vanished while trying to activate a grand magic circle.

Cheryl left everything as it was — until now. She’s finally ready to let go, and you’re the lucky soul charged with taming the arcane chaos.

A quick tidy up

You will start in the kitchen with some light cleaning — mop up spills, shuffle books around, and embrace the domestic disarray. Once that’s done, head upstairs past the packed bookshelf to reach the alchemist’s workshop.

Inside the workshop, your first job is to organise the cabinet on the left wall. That’s where all the creature specimens, shiny ores, and rainbow-hued reagent bottles belong. Don’t overlook the quill perched on the right-hand shelf — it’s not just decorative.

If chaos were an aesthetic, this alchemist nailed it.

Restoring the potion book

With the floor cleared, you’ll spot a textured leather book lying on the floor with three loose pages scattered nearby. Track down each page and return them to their rightful place.

The research book reveals instructions that hint at something deeper than “my husband vanished, please clean up.” Turns out, the alchemist was dabbling in some rather extraordinary arcana.

Every good workshop needs a handbook (and a firework recipe).

There are three main activities to complete. Two are whimsical magical experiments — crafting a firework and making a broomstick fly. The third? That’s where the mystery of the missing alchemist begins.

Experiment 1: Crafting a Firework

Find the Blastbloom (aka bomb flower) in the adjacent Herbs Lab — a blue and orange spiky specimen on the top of the shelf unit, right of the stairs. Head back to the workshop and fetch the thermal mix from the bottle sporting a flame icon.

The Blastbloom — ready for your firework experiment.

Drop both into the cauldron, and boom! You’ve got yourself a firework. Bonus: it’s one of the game’s 49 unique anomalies, so keep an eye out for it later at the Museum.

Experiment 2: Making the Broomstick Fly

Time to defy gravity! Brew a “Skywing” potion by fetching the quill from the right-hand shelf in the workshop, and the blue canned flowers from the windowsill (bottom right) in the Herbs Lab.

The Canned Flowers are resting easy on the windowsill, waiting to work some magic.

Mix the two in the cauldron, then use your potion on the broomstick. Voilà — airborne cleaning, and another anomaly for your collection.

The Chronos Rite

With magical mischief handled, it’s time to unravel the main mystery. What happened to the alchemist?

In the Herbs Lab, find a manuscript resting on a pale aqua pillow. It details the Chronos Rite — a powerful magic circle said to send objects (and people!) to other dimensions. You’ll need to “stand at the exact centre of the circle” later on, so remember that clue.

The potion book’s third recipe is “Dew of the Silver Mirror”. While in the Herbs Lab, gather Evening Moonflower (tall jar, beside the top of the stairs), Mercury Thistle (brown and red, in a jar on the bottom right), and Silverleaf Elixir (tall bottle, bottom of the stairs). Return to the workshop, toss them in the cauldron to brew the Dew, then use it on the mysterious mirror.

All together now: Mercury thistle, Evening Moonflower, and Silverleaf Elixir.

Congratulations, you have revealed a portal to subspace.

Into Subspace: Finding the Alchemist

Once inside subspace, in the centre of the room you’ll spot the Chronos Rite itself traced across the floor, and the familiar Chronos Rite diagram on the wall. You will also find a grey-green crystal ball (an anomaly) and a glowing multi-dimensional cube (also an anomaly).

Just another quiet day in subspace…

Enter photo mode, open stickers, and — surprise! — find the legendary alchemist as a sticker. Place his sticker in the very centre of the magic circle on the floor, just as the manuscript instructed.

Who knew the other dimension was hiding in my sticker album all along?
Phew indeed, Ian. Phew indeed.

And just like that, Whisper Daily reports on the miraculous return of the legendary alchemist. Another job well done — and a few more secrets uncovered in Whisper of the House.

Whisper of the House is out now on PC via Steam.
