Amazon Prime’s Fallout Unveils A Dark and Intriguing First Look

FRESH LOOK: Prepare for a gripping adventure as Amazon Prime’s ‘Fallout’ builds hype for its big debut next year.

In a first look from Vanity Fair, and some accompanied tweets from the official Fallout account, we now have fresh details of post-apocolyptic Los Angeles and the characters of Fallout.

Set 219 years after the events of the Great War, Lucy, portrayed by Ella Purnell, has spent her entire life in the safety of Vault 33.

That’s until a crisis forces her into the perilous post-apocalyptic wasteland teeming with giant insects, mutant abominations, and a sunbaked population reminiscent of the unruly Old West.

Jonathan Nolan, director, notes that the series explores themes of division and inequality, mirroring the issues plaguing society today. Lucy’s innocence confronts the harsh realities of a world shaped by the fallout of a global catastrophe, offering a unique blend of social satire, action, and adventure.

“Lucy is charming and plucky and strong… and then you see she’s confronted with the reality of, hey, maybe the supposedly virtuous things you grew up with are not necessarily that virtuous,” Nolan told Vanity Fair.

“You have your point of view because you never ran out of food, right? You guys were able to share everything—because you had enough to share.”

“Her collision with the hard reality of other people’s experiences and what happened to the people who, frankly, were left behind, left to die,” Nolan said.

As the series unfolds, Lucy’s journey intersects with a diverse cast, including Kyle MacLachlan as Lucy’s father and “Overseer” of Vault 33, Homeland’s Sarita Choudhury, Moisés Arias (Yes, that’s Rico from Hannah Montana), and Michael Emerson who starred in Nolan’s Person of Interest.

Each character chasing an artifact that could reshape the power dynamic in this shattered world.

It’s a story that at its very beginning echoes the much familiar story of Fallout 3. But Todd Howard also assured us during a previous guest appearance on the Lex Fridman Podcast, that the upcoming Amazon series would “not be a retelling of a game story”, but instead would take place in a separate area of the game’s world map.

“Let’s tell a story here that fits in the world that we have built, doesn’t break any of the rules, can reference things in the games, but isn’t a retelling of the games,” Howard said.

Adding complexity to the ensemble is Walton Goggins as ‘The Ghoul’, though as a human known as ‘Cooper Howard’. A rugged and heavily scarred wanderer, possessing both an unwavering sense of honour and a chilling ruthlessness. Distinct from the typical Ghouls in Fallout games, The Ghoul has retained elements of his humanity despite the ravages of radiation. As Lucy’s polar opposite, The Ghoul becomes a guide and protagonist in the older world, offering a unique perspective on the series’ dark and enjoyable universe.

In crafting this immersive world, the series embraces both the darkness and the enjoyment that defines the games. As Jonathan Nolan aptly puts it, “It’s a dark world in many ways, but the games were fun to play, fun to explore, and I think that was a mandate for us: to make sure that it was enjoyable to spend time in this universe.”

The speculator in me is wondering if we’ll see a trailer release sometime soon, perhaps a surprise glimpse at The Game Awards next week?

Announced to arrive April 12 on Amazon Prime Video, my body is SO READY to binge this amazing looking series.
