There’s a new cosy farming game on the block, where cute and whacky meets wild physics.
In development by Radical Forge, Southfield introduces you to Bud, a doughy, wobbly creature who farms interesting and wild crops.

I recently played the demo and spent my time building, tinkering and rolling around the colourful lands of Southfield. The environment is whimsical as you meet rolling hills filled with mushrooms, vibrant beaches, spooky mountains and lush forests.

On my brief adventure I met some eccentric NPCs who needed my help. The NPCs offer you new quests, it could be an investigation, gathering materials, or helping to build structures. These quirky characters are a great addition to the world, my favourite being Big Sleeves!

At the beginning of the game you receive a shopping crate, this is where you can sell your items – with a twist. You can’t place your items in the crate, you need to THROW them! This is where I believe physics will take place, as later in the demo you can build machinery to creatively and efficiently deposit your items.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get that far into the demo due to stability issues. Otherwise, I really would have loved to have played with that mechanic.

The demo takes about 1-2 hours to complete, however for me, it took a long time to get through it due to stability.
A known issue, some parts were completely unplayable. When the game went into night mode — I experienced some extreme lag. I turned on in-game FPS for Steam and was met with 1 frame per second; FPS issues returned to normal once daylight hit in game at 6am.
This was extremely frustrating and I found myself spending the day rushing to get quests completed. During night time sequences, I would complete another task or have Netflix on in the background while I waited.

During my five or so hours with the game, I thoroughly enjoyed the farming and gathering aspect, however, I believe the stability issues do not show the game’s full potential.
I truly hope this was an isolated issue for myself and others don’t come across this. I look forward to the game’s release in the future.
You can play the Southfield demo now on Steam.
