As I pulled back the sheet on Autopsy Simulator, I was expecting a science-filled dream, but what I discovered was a morgue full of horror, gore, and a hint of the supernatural instead – a welcome surprise!
Being a fan of medical dramas and true crime shows, I was eager to dissect cadavers and uncover the mysteries of death. However, I wasn’t prepared for just how gruesome those cadavers would be! Woodland Games‘ Autopsy Simulator pushed my limits and these particular autopsies had me squeamish.
#4 Samantha Barker
Samantha arrived looking a little worse for wear, well for a dead body at least. This particular autopsy felt like a beginner’s mission as the game took you through all the tools step-by-step. I felt confident with the gameplay as I examined and dissected the body. But when it came to the stomach, each cut made me shudder, unsure of what I would find inside. The outcome was something that completely killed my appetite for that night.

The stomach organ always makes me queasy, not only is it delicate but you don’t know what it is filled with, apart from bile. The unknown makes the scenario so much worse and from this particular autopsy, the stomach became my least favourite examined organ.

To top the brutality, I also needed to rip out Samantha’s spinal cord and I really felt like I stepped in the shoes of Predator with that one.

Although Samantha Barker is one of the first autopsies, it is one of the most thorough – and dissecting everything is equally interesting and unpleasant.
#3 Harper Lloyd
At the beginning of each autopsy, you read the police case file before examining the body for background information – it felt like a birthday card and the game was giving me a gory gift wrapped up in a body bag. Though this next “gift” had seen better days, Harper Lloyd’s week old body was pulled out of a well.

As I approached the examination table I was mentally preparing myself for what kind of bloated mass I was about to unzip. In my head, all I could think about was the zombie that was stuck in a well from The Walking Dead.

Thankfully, as I unzipped the body bag, it wasn’t as big or as bloated, but it was still equally as gross. This particular autopsy was beyond gooey and slimy. Harper’s waterlogged cadaver had me wanting to rush through the examination as the state of it made me uneasy.
The game also teaches you a lot about dead bodies; it was interesting to learn how the body decomposes when submerged in water for some time.
#2 Richard Jackson
Richard Jackson’s autopsy was quite a challenge, to say the least. Walking into the room, I was struck by how this cadaver wasn’t lying flat. I learned that muscles can contract and contort significantly under extreme heat, almost making it feel like I was about to dissect a statue.

With my newfound knowledge of how the body reacts to heat, I had my scalpel ready to see how charred the insides were. As I cut, and opened up the body I audibly gasped as the expected burnt insides were not what I found. I was looking down into what I could tastefully describe as organ soup. The body was filled with blood and fluids and everything was floating around like a watered-down stew. As the pathologist on the job, I had the right tool in hand: a vacuum. Once that was all cleaned up the autopsy continued as normal as it could be.

#1 James “Junior” Evans
Saving Autopsy Simulator‘s best for last is the autopsy of James “Junior” Evans. When I unzipped the bag from this body and placed it on the table I could not look away. It took me a long time to start the autopsy as I was just astounded by what I was looking at…

Not only was James missing a head, but he was also missing his James Junior, Junior. After examining the body closely and wondering ‘what on earth did this poor man go through?’, I could not wait to pick up my tools and find out.

This autopsy was gnarly, it had you identifying teeth marks, inspecting the tear of missing limbs and finding clues within the missing flesh. This particular autopsy involved a lot of sleuthing and though it was beyond disgusting, it was my favourite case to unravel.

If you’re into gore and don’t mind seeing a few dead bodies, Autopsy Simulator is now available on Steam for $36.50 AUD. The developers are also working on an update that will add an Autopsy-only mode. So, if the story mode doesn’t cut it for you, you’ll soon be able to slice and stitch to your heart’s content.
