If you’ve ever sat at your desk wishing your workday came with a side of dopamine, then welcome — you’re among friends. Somewhere between answering emails and pretending to read spreadsheets there’s a sweet spot: games you can play while you work. Not in the “oops, accidentally sunk three hours into a dungeon” kind of way, but rather in the “tiny companion cheering you on from the corner of your screen” way.
From idle worlds to productivity pets, these are the quiet, cosy background PC games that can make even the most beige office day feel a little more fun and a lot more bearable.
Bongo Cat
If you ever needed a tiny, rhythmic cheerleader to push you through your inbox, Bongo Cat has you covered. This desktop mascot taps along to every click, keystroke, and swipe you make.
The premise is simple: the more you interact with your PC, the more your feline racks up points and unlocks new accessories. Hats, props, silly add-ons – it’s the kind of progression that makes finishing that overdue article feel weirdly rewarding (not speaking from experience at all…).
It’s free on Steam, charmingly pointless, and even lets you sync with up to 100 friends so your whole team can track their productivity percussionists. A purr-fect desk companion.

Rusty’s Retirement
A video game I reviewed on a whim that ended up being my personal Game of the Year (GOTY) for 2024; Rusty’s Retirement is a top-pick for any cosy idler. It docks neatly at the bottom (or side) of your screen and tasks you with building a humble farm, planting crops, harvesting, and managing robot helpers.
As you progress, you unlock new crops, bio-fuel, upgrades, and even new farms – so there’s always a quiet incentive to check back in. The automation means you don’t have to babysit the farm. It’s perfect for letting the game hum away while you get to work.
And if that’s not enough, then how about the free DLC? Rusty’s Retirement now has collaborations with popular roguelites Vampire Survivors and Balatro. If that doesn’t tickle your pickle I don’t know what will.
Pick up Rusty’s Retirement on Steam for $10.49 and find out for yourself why it was my GOTY for 2024.
Bao Bao’s Cozy Laundromat
When QD’s Sonia Heng reviewed Bao Bao’s Cozy Laundromat, she never expected it to have the impact it did.
Sonia says: “Who doesn’t love throwing on a load of laundry while WFH? If you’re into multitasking and ticking off productivity goals for work, home and a little game time, add Bao Bao’s Cozy Laundromat to your library.”
In Bao Bao’s, you’re a panda running a laundromat. Buy washing machines and dryers to expand your empire. Soak up the serene lofi that will only boost your productivity levels further. Don’t worry about checking in often – money rolls in at a crawl, so you don’t have to babysit it. It’s more “nice surprise when you check back later” than “oops I lost an hour.”
And at $5.95 on Steam, it’s cheaper than doing laundry at an IRL laundromat.

My Little Life
Ever wanted to play The Sims while on the clock? My Little Life has you covered. It’s the perfect little “life sim on autopilot.” While you work, your tiny pixel-people live their lives: working jobs, earning money, taking care of their needs, and pursuing their own goals.
You can check in to customise their homes, or to see how they’re tracking with their tasks, but you are otherwise free from any dependency (unlike The Sims).
If you want a mellow little companion that gives you tiny dopamine hits throughout the day, My Little Life is a surprisingly good pick for work-time gaming. Grab it on Steam for $8.79 and enjoy.
Ropuka’s Idle Island
I can’t quite put my finger on why Ropuka’s Idle Island was so addictive. Was it the perfectly balanced progression mechanics? Was it the aesthetically pleasing unlockables that made Ropuka and his island a pretty desktop diorama? Was it the fact that he’s an adorable frog? It’s hard to say. But what I do know is that Ropuka’s Idle Island is on Steam for only $5.95 and is an absolute must-have for your desktop.
And if you end up as attached as I am, keep your eyes peeled for Ropuka – the upcoming top-down adventure clicker that carries the same charm, seemingly with a little more hands-on chaos.
No release date planned yet, but this one is sitting pretty in my Steam Wishlist.

Whimside
A pixel-perfect garden filled with cute, goofy “Whimlings.” Your task? Catch them, breed them, catalogue their DNA, and build what feels like a mini creature-collector Pokédex.
The hook is instant: an easy tutorial, an amazing soundtrack, and a sandbox garden that’s yours to customise. Whimside makes for a surprisingly addictive workflow companion. However, Breeding and trait-hunting can become compelling distractions. Self-restraint may be required if you hope to actually get any work done.
Pick up Whimside on Steam for $8.59 and thank me later.
