The PlayStation 5 Pro is just a few days away! Thanks to PlayStation Australia, we’ve got our hands on it early. Right now, we’re hard at work testing it out and look forward to sharing more, but for now, we’re happy to share our unboxing experience.
First Impressions
Compared to the original console, it feels far less bulky. Lifting it out of the box compared to the original PS5 release was a different experience, the Pro’s size is more in line with the Slim. The original PS5 weighed 4.5 kg, while the Pro’s mass is just 3.1kg — minus the disc drive. Height wise, it’s about as tall as the original console.
Its black racing stripes add character to the overall design — after all, racing stripes make things go faster, right? The stripes also make way for the horizontal stand feet, included in the box.
Just like the Slim console, the Pro has four interchangeable faceplates, though this time they’re all matte, rather than half of them glossy — a welcome change (gloss can go away).

The biggest thing for many will be the lack of disc drive. Thankfully you’re able to buy an external disc drive from many retailers, including JB HiFi, EB Games, and Amazon — though stock seems to be the big issue at the moment. The external disc drives retail for $159 at JB Hi-Fi.
Vertical Stand
The Vertical Stand was a sinch to install. After removing it from the box, simply turn your PS5 Console upside down, remove the plastic plug, move the stand into place, take the screen, and carefully thread it through. It tightens quite firmly by hand, but a flat-head screwdriver will tighten it up nicely. There’s an extra hole in the stand to store the plastic plug. The Vertical Stand retails for around $49 AUD from JB Hi-Fi.
