Tips for Gamers this Holiday Season

The weather is getting warmer, the parties are ramping up and the lazy evening barbecues are just around the corner!

With the golden part of the year ahead of us, it also brings with it the holiday season. A time when family and friends gather and delve into good food, funny memories, and quality time.

However, as a gamer, it can be a trying time. Your little family members get into your expensive, pristine gear. You’re accused of being anti-social at the parties for bringing your Switch. This gaming slander just won’t do!

Here’s my tips to get the most out of your holiday season without having to sacrifice your favourite hobby.

  1. Have some family-friendly games on hand. There are many multiplayer games on the market that allow for groups to play together, all ages are welcome. Mario Kart is a great choice, and for something a little more silly and adult, Jackbox Party Pack won’t let you down. Getting everyone involved with the games can create some really cherished memories!
  1. Have everything charged. Nothing is worse than when your favourite cousins finally link up, but then the controller dies in the middle of a Mortal Kombat battle.
  1. Protect the good stuff. If you’ve got guests who can’t control their hands entering your gaming space, it can be easy for accidents to happen. Remove expensive items from line of sight, relocate delicate pieces out of reach, and set firm boundaries with younger children on what they can and cannot touch. If there’s a lot going on, simply shut the door to your gaming space and write up a quick sign to ban entry. It’s okay to protect expensive items from damage.
  1. Live in the moment! It’s easy to fall into the habit of jumping into gaming devices or phones when the conversation lulls. Instead, walk your older relatives through your current game. Bonus points if you give them a go! Introducing them into your world paired with tech advancements can be a sweet bonding moment between generations.
  1. Lastly, have fun! It’s a lovely time to introduce the young and old gamers of the family to new and fun titles. Don’t write people off because you assume they wouldn’t like a particular title or games in general. Demonstrate your knowledge and have fun with your loved ones. You might introduce something to them that changes their world!
