It’s been a whirlwind journey for The Plucky Squire — from its enchanting reveal in June 2022 to its release just days ago, it has quickly captured the hearts of gamers around the world.
Despite an initial delay that kept fans eagerly waiting, the game’s unique art style, along with its lovable characters, have made it one of the more popular indie releases of 2024.

I recently sat down with Jonathan Biddle, co-founder of All Possible Futures and co-director of The Plucky Squire. Biddle revealed the game was initially a smaller title, then after pitching to Devolver Digital transformed into an eight to ten hour endeavour.
We also spoke about the game’s success, the challenges of jumping between worlds, and how the extra development time made an impact.
When development of The Plucky Squire began four years ago, Biddle says he never imagined it’d become what it is today.
“Well, we were trying to make a much smaller game,” Biddles told Quest Daily.
“What we imagined was like a three to five hour game. We did a demo originally for Devolver,
and it was about half an hour and it was brilliant,” he said.

“We were so pleased with it and everyone loved it. Well, okay, we’ll just take this and we’ll, you know, make this a longer game — not go too crazy with it.”
“And we were planning for that and we had like a release date quite a while ago, I think, maybe like
18 months, two years ago, you know, just a small project, a small team,” he said.

That’s when Biddle says Devolver Digital came to them and it all started to ramp up.
“When Devolver came to us and like, they saw the potential.”
“They asked what can we do with this game. How far can we push it? If you wanted to make the best version of this, what would you do? And so we talked a lot about that. And then that’s what kind of pushed it out a lot further,” he said.
“We’re a year later than we wanted to be originally but it’s been worth it.”
