Review | Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth (PC)

Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth builds on the cosy foundations of Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley, trading in music and mischief for snow and stillness. At its core, it is a gentle story about friendship, where quiet interactions and small acts of kindness remind you that even in the stillness of winter, connection can bring warmth.

Friends literally digging Moomintroll out of a hole!

This story-driven puzzle adventure invites you to grab your mittens, pour a warm cup of cocoa, and settle in for a gentle winter journey full of charm.

A Winter Awakening

Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth begins as the Moomin family settle into hibernation, with Moomintroll drifting into a long winter sleep. That rest does not last, as a strange noise pulls him from bed and into a chance encounter with a squirrel. This leads him into a harsh snowstorm, where he meets up with his friend Too-Ticky.

Goodnight dear.

From there, he sets out on a simple but heartfelt journey, helping his quirky friends solve their wintery problems. Along the way, he gathers materials to build a bonfire to celebrate the Winter Solstice and bring light back to Moominvalley.

Put him into recovery position Moomintroll.

What begins as something unfamiliar becomes a test of Moomintroll’s courage, as he develops the skills needed to face his first winter. I found the journey genuinely rewarding as I explored the snowy landscape alongside him.

Cosy Puzzles, Warmer Moments

Gameplay in Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth leans into simple, cosy puzzle design. Nothing here will trouble you, which I found worked in its favour, as it keeps things moving without pulling you out of the atmosphere. A clear and helpful map supports exploration, letting you track objectives while still feeling free to wander.

Lighting the way with my matches.

That simplicity carries through to the tools you collect and upgrade with Too-Ticky along the way. From lighting paths with matches to using mittens to hurl snowballs at icicles and create new routes, each addition gently expands how you can interact with the world. Upgrading these tools added a light sense of progression without overcomplicating things, which I appreciated.

Too-Ticky upgrades your tools.

At one point, I needed a shovel to dig through large piles of snow, but I didn’t expect to win it through a snowball fight with Little My. Scooping up snow and landing hits felt surprisingly satisfying and it brought out a real sense of childlike whimsy that perfectly matched the game’s tone.

Take that Little My.

I did come across a few small niggles during my playthrough, however. Movement can feel slow, and some interactions — especially pushing larger snowballs — are a little finicky. The quest structure leans into fetch-style tasks, and while I stayed engaged, they rarely asked much of me. At the final stretch, the pacing slips slightly, with an extra scenario after the Winter Solstice bonfire that I felt did not need to be there.

A Hand-Drawn Snowy Dream

Visually, Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth is absolutely gorgeous. Despite its snowy palette of icy blues and soft whites, the world never feels lifeless. I loved how the hand-drawn style, inspired by Tove Jansson’s original illustrations, gives every scene a sense of warmth and personality. The subtle sketch-like overlay makes it feel as though the world is being brought to life right in front of you.

Yodelayheeoo!

The audio complements this beautifully. The soundtrack captured the quiet stillness of winter without ever feeling intrusive. It kept me grounded in that chilly atmosphere, while still maintaining a cosy tone to go along with the game’s gentle pacing.

Moomintroll, A Brave Heart

Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth explores the joy and uncertainty of experiencing something new for the first time. I loved watching Moomintroll grow in confidence as he braved the harsh winter while suporting his pals.

What a party Moomintroll is about to have!

It is a gorgeous game, filled with quirky, loveable characters that added to my overall enjoyment. While most of the puzzles are on the easier side, I appreciated the relaxed pace, as it allowed the atmosphere and story to shine. It may slightly overstay its welcome, but it remains a cosy journey full of heart.
