Preview | The Plucky Squire ‘Something Special’ (PC)

I’ve never played a game quite like this. This week, The Plucky Squire finally got a release date, and I’ve got to say, hold onto your hats. What starts as a charming 2D storybook adventure quickly turns into something much more magical — it’s an experience you don’t want to miss.

At first, it looks like your typical 2D platformer set in a beautifully illustrated book. But the moment Jot, our plucky little hero, leaps off the page and into the 3D world, everything changes. This isn’t just a gimmick — it’s the core of the game. You’ll be hopping between 2D and 3D, solving puzzles, collecting items, and outsmarting enemies in ways that feel fresh and exciting every time.

On September 17th, we’ll all get to dive into this action-adventure, 2D/3D platformer storybook. But thanks to Devolver Digital, I got to play the first four chapters early — and I was so sad when it was all over. This game is shaping up to be one of the best indie releases of 2024.

As you’d expect, the beginning of the game is filled with tutorials. It’s a slow buildup to leaping from the pages, but the payoff is spectacular.

Developed by All Possible Futures, the game follows Jot and his friends — storybook characters who stumble into a three-dimensional world outside the pages of their book.

Things take a turn when Humgrump, the book’s villain, realises he’s doomed to lose the battle against good forever. So, he decides to rewrite the story and kicks Jot out of the book, flipping everything on its head. Now, Jot has to tackle some wild challenges to save his friends and bring back the book’s happy ending.

Making the Jump

One of the highlights for me was that first leap from the pages into the 3D world — it was pure magic. Jumping between 2D and 3D is mesmerising, letting you solve puzzles, box badgers, fly with a jetpack (though, I haven’t experienced this yet), and more. Every transition feels like a new adventure, and I couldn’t get enough of it.

Jot can leap from the pages, manually turn the pages to return to a previous part of the story, and enter there, often allowing him to collect items or interact with the world in a way that wasn’t accessible in the 2D world .

But it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. One sequence had me sneaking past giant beetles in the 3D world, and let me tell you, it was terrifying! Those beetles came charging at me, and if I didn’t time my sneak well I was dead. It was scary but in the best way, and it looked amazing.

This game is something special, and it’s definitely going to be worth the wait.

Mark your calendars for September 17th, and get ready to jump into (and out of) this enchanting adventure. The Plucky Squire is dropping on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.
