In Friday’s Xbox Developer Direct, Compulsion Games announced that South of Midnight will release on April 9th for us Aussies, with an early access period beginning on April 4th for those who purchase the premium edition.
Compulsion also showcased some in-depth gameplay and the overarching story, which you can watch below.
You play as Hazel, a seemingly typical 19-year-old living in the fictional town of Prospero in the American Deep South. The game drawing inspiration from real world locations like New Orleans and the Appalachian Mountains. The story begins with Hazel separated from her mother by a hurricane, which destroys her home but grants her amazing new abilities. Her newfound power as a “Weaver” allows her to take on fantastical monsters in real-time combat.

Each region is ruled by a mythical creature whose story Hazel has to “unravel” by collecting fragments of their memories. Assembling these fragments allows Hazel to experience their tragic backstories for herself, and figure out how to ease their suffering.

The Deep South setting, fantastical magic elements, and strong female lead gave me Princess and the Frog vibes, with the gameplay and story reminiscent of Kena Bridge of Spirits.
Pre-orders are now available on Steam and the Microsoft Store. South of Midnight will be available on Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam on April 9th.
