It’s time to “bring out ‘yer dead”, because Wizards of the Coast has announced a brand new collaboration, this time with Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
The cult classic film, released in 1975 (49 short years ago!) by the titular comedy group Monty Python, has stood the test of time as a masterpiece of comedy, misdirection and absolute nonsense. What else would we expect from the group that brought us The Ministry of Silly Walks, The Lumberjack Song and of course, the thing none of us ever expected: the Spanish Inquisition?

Magic: The Gathering will be releasing two limited edition Secret lair sets, each featuring favourite moments, quotes and characters from the film. All of the cards are re-prints of existing cards with brand new titles and artwork based on the film.
Monty Python x Secret Lair
Cards dropping in Volume 1 include the Black Knight, featured in “Tis But a Scratch!”, as well as a double-sided card to help ignite everyone’s favourite conversation starter: “What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?”

Volume 2 will have you passing judgement on whether a local woman is a witch (she certainly looks like one), as well as having you answer the bridgekeeper these questions three: What is your name? What is your quest? What is your favourite colour?

If you happen to be at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, you can pick up an even more limited Foil Edition from the Hasbro Pulse booth…

I’m personally offended by the limitation of these Foil Editions to attendees of a particular Comic-Con, in a particular city, in a particular country. I’ve been told that the decision to limit the product to that specific ‘Con was decided by The Lady of the Lake, who held aloft Excalibur and proclaimed that San Diego, by divine providence, was to carry the Foil Editions.
But in my opinion, strange women lying around in ponds is no basis for a system of product distribution. Product availability should derive from a mandate from the masses not some farcical aquatic ceremony.
I’ll stop here and merely say: Wizards, please make the Foil Editions available more widely…
Both of the regular volumes will be on sale, with a limited quantity available, starting Monday, Jul 29 until Sunday, August 18 – while supplies last. You can sign up for notifications on the Wizards of The Coast website.
