CARIMARA: Beneath The Forlorn Limbs: ‘I’ll Play It If There’s No Jump Scares’

This one’s a bit off my usual gaming menu, but as long as CARIMARA: Beneath the forlorn limbs doesn’t hit me with a cheap jump scare, I’m in. Revealed during this morning’s Six One Indie Showcase, CARIMARA is a creepy little fairy tale where you play as the titular Carimara — an occultist who conjures spirits to answer questions using cards. Think haunted hotline, but make it medieval.

According to its Steam page, the game takes inspiration from obscure Normandy folklore (I do love me some folklore), and clocks in at about an hour long. Short enough to enjoy in one sitting, long enough to deeply regret playing it in the dark. Almost all of the visuals and sounds are taken from real photographs and field recordings of the French countryside, which is charming until you remember that countryside is probably haunted now.

I did not enjoy having a full-screen of this on my monitor. (Supplied)

The art is drenched in sepia tones and definitely looks like it was pulled from an old storybook left in a too-quiet attic. It’s eerie without going full nightmare fuel — at least from what we’ve seen. It definitely toes the line between cosy and cursed, which I personally love, but also fear.

There’s no solid release date yet, just a vague “Summer 2025” (our Winter), but the delay’s apparently because the devs are in talks with “an interesting publisher.” Mysterious! Suspicious! Kinda hot!

While we wait, you can wishlist CARIMARA: Beneath the forlorn limbs on Steam now. And maybe pick up an Ouija board and start practising your ghost-chat game.
