Faster, Sharper, Sleeker: Sonic Generations Levels Up on Nintendo Switch 2

Sonic x Shadow Generations makes the leap to Nintendo’s next-gen console with a slick upgrade for the Switch 2. With the remaster originally launching in late 2024, it was great to see SEGA have this enhanced version ready to roll on day one.

Two Hedgehogs, Two Timelines, One Goal

If you haven’t played Sonic Generations yet (and honestly, it’s my favourite Sonic game), it’s a glorious mash-up of old-school 2D charm and high-speed 3D action. Retro and Modern Sonic join forces in a time-travel adventure to stop Dr Eggman from messing with the timeline.

Shadow also gets his time to shine in an all-new story. With Black Doom back to cause chaos and Shadow unlocking dark powers of his own, he’s ready to race through the past and rewrite his own future. Between the three distinct styles of Sonic gameplay, there’s no shortage of hedgehog action for longtime fans.

Switch 2 Brings the Speed

The Switch 2 version of Sonic Generations shows just how far the system has come. As a Nintendo fan, I’ve dealt with my fair share of muddy visuals and choppy framerates in past Sonic ports, but that’s no longer the case. Now, I just grab my new hybrid console and blaze through Generations anytime, anywhere.

Finally, a smooth 60fps on a Nintendo console, gotta go fast!

This is still one of Sonic’s best outings, mixing 2D and 3D levels as Classic and Modern Sonic team up across remixed stages from the series’ past. Charging through Green Hill Zone again, with its familiar loops, palm trees and that unforgettable music, instantly brought back memories of playing Sonic as a kid.

Performance has had a serious upgrade, with crisp visuals in both docked and handheld modes. Running at a smooth 60fps, the action finally feels as fast as it looks. Sonic Generations already looked great, but the Switch 2 makes every colour pop and each environment feel more alive. It’s a clear step up from the original Switch version.

Performance or Power? Shadow Brings Both

It’s been a long time since Shadow got the spotlight, but Sonic x Shadow Generations brings him back with style and substance. I hadn’t really delved into his story before, and I was surprised by how much darker and more emotional it felt compared to Sonic’s usual birght adventures.

Edgier, darker and cooler- Shadow is back!

On Nintendo Switch 2, this new content includes performance options, which I was genuinely glad to see. In docked mode, players can choose between quality mode, which favours resolution at 30fps, or performance mode, which bumps the action up to a smooth 60fps. The visual difference is minimal, and in a game built on speed and momentum, performance mode is the obvious choice.

Lighting has had a huge upgrade in Shadow Generations on Switch 2 (left) vs Switch 1 (right)

In handheld mode, the visuals take a slight dip compared to docked play, but it’s still a clear step up from the original Switch. Lighting looks better, performance stays solid, and the action remains smooth, even during Shadow’s most intense combat and platforming moments. Shadow’s comeback doesn’t miss a step.

A New Generation for the Blue Blur

The Switch 2 upgrade makes Sonic x Shadow Generations feel like a proper modern release, not just another handheld compromise. With sharper visuals, a stable framerate, and the flexibility to play anywhere, this upgrade finally brings Sonic’s trademark speed to Nintendo fans.

Sonic actually looks like a blue blur on Nintendo Switch 2.

For years, Mario has held the home ground advantage, but now Sonic is picking up rings and respect on the Nintendo Switch 2. Sonic x Shadow Generations now plays the way a Sonic game should. Nothing but blue blur.

Here’s to a new era for Sonic on Nintendo platforms, where he doesn’t just go fast but runs flawlessly.

Sonic X Shadow Generations is now available on Nintendo Switch 2 for $74.95
