Video games releasing in August 2024

After a few leaner months, August is looking meaty. Serving up tasty prime cuts like Star Wars Outlaws, Visions of Mana, and Black Myth: WuKong that you can really sink your teeth into.

There’s plenty of dessert too, with indies like Thank Goodness You’re Here and Mika and the Witches Mountain on the plate.

Here are our most anticipated games releasing in August 2024.

Thank Goodness You’re Here

From the eccentric minds at Coal Supper comes a side-splitting tale of a traveling salesman exploring the peculiar town of Barnsworth. Interact with the bizarre locals and complete various odd jobs for them, as you wait for your big meeting with the mayor.

While plenty of games have rib-tickling moments, it’s rare we get a full-blown comedy game. This delightfully British adventure, packed with Monty Python-esque silliness, is the perfect way to kick off the month with a smile!

Thank Goodness You’re Here! releases onto PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC on August 2nd.

Cat Quest III

The third installment in the purr-loved Cat Quest franchise is taking things to the next level; with naval warfare, a freely explorable 2.5D map, and an evolved combat system. Shiver me whiskers!

Explore the fantastical pirate themed world by boat and paw, seamlessly switching from ship to shore while hunting for treasure, fighting Pi-rats sent by the dreaded Pirate King, and uncovering the mystery of the Northern Star.

The paw-geous open-world action RPG can be enjoyed solo or in local co-op, a-meow-zing! Cat Quest III sails on to PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PC on the 8th of August.

SteamWorld Heist 2

Beloved 2015 action-adventure SteamWorld Heist, saw you gallivanting through space with your rag-tag crew. The sequel, however, looks to be more of a swashbuckling affair, setting sail on the high seas. The charming art style, kooky characters, and turn-based combat – that made the original a fan favourite – all make a return.

Assemble and arm your crew, customise their abilities, and dive into strategic, turn-based gun battles that I can only describe as ricochet-porn. New to the series is real-time naval combat, battling pirates and the like, as you explore strange tides. Raid enemy bases and nab their loot to bolster the strength of your crew.

Get your spyglass ready, SteamWorld Heist II is on the horizon! It’s launching on August 9th for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Black Myth: Wukong

Ever since it was announced three years ago, Black Myth: Wukong has been an eyeball magnet. With a remarkably detailed world, fantastic enemy design, and fast-paced brutal combat; it was one of the first games to tease the potential of the Unreal 5 engine.

Developed by Game Science, Black Myth: Wukong is the first game in a planned series exploring different tales from Chinese mythology. Wukong is an action-RPG that follows the Destined One, who is based on Sun Wukong from the novel Journey to the West.

Wield the Ruyi Jingu Bang, a legendary staff that can change its size and length, leading to some pretty cool moves in combat. Add in magic and shape shifting and you’re in for a good time! Interestingly it’s been reported that the game will have a variable difficulty, where battles may change depending on the player’s skill. A boss may enter another phase if the player is doing TOO well against them.

Look out for Black Myth: Wukong on the 20th of August, for PlayStation 5 and PC, with Xbox Series X|S versions to come at a later time

Mika and the Witches Mountain

For too long the video game genre of ‘witch that flies around on broomstick’ has been dominated by the same old IP that shall not be named! But that all changes this month, with Mika and the Witch’s Mountain set to make all your cosy magic dreams come true!

In what feels very much inspired by the Studio Ghibli movie Kiki’s Delivery Service, this coming-of-age fantasy adventure puts you in the shoes of Mika, an aspiring witch. Deliver packages for the townsfolk, make friends, and explore the Island of Winds.

The mini-open world is full of secrets, characters, quests and collectibles for Mika to discover. As you deliver your parcels, the villagers will rate your delivery skills and you’ll earn coins for your efforts, which can be used to buy new and improved brooms to soar to greater heights!

This heart warming adventure flies onto PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PC on August 22nd.

Concord

Concord is a 5v5 PvP arena shooter with fast combat, flashy visuals, and a large roster of heroes to pick from, each with their own skills and weapons. You’re dropped into an arena to duke it out with the opposing team where you’ll be able to switch between characters upon death, bringing variety and strategy.

The game recently had a couple of beta weekends which I jumped into. It ticked all the boxes for what I’m after out of a shooter experience: fun gameplay, a bunch of unique characters and play-styles, and highly polished cinematics to help you engage with those characters on a deeper level. It felt very moreish and I just kept wanting to play ‘one more game’.

Concord is out on the 24th of August for PS5 and PC.

Visions of Mana

The eagerly anticipated next entry into the esteemed Mana series hits this month. Visions of Mana is a stunning new action-RPG, set in a bright and cheerful world, filled with colour and cute and cuddly creatures.

Join Val and friends on an epic journey to the Mana tree, exploring a vast semi-open world, and crossing swords with all sorts of weird and wonderful beasts. Large wolf-like animals called Pikuls can be ridden to help you explore the world at speed, and boy do they look cute.

Build a party from five playable characters, various supporting companions, and eight elemental classes that unlock new stats, weapons and abilities in combat. While roaming the world, elemental vessels can be used to explore in cool ways, such as riding high on wind currents or summoning golems to move heavy objects.

Visions of Mana lands on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on the 30th of August. There’s also a demo out now to try, but be aware that your progress will not carry over to the main game.

Star Wars Outlaws

It’s Star Wars but without the lightsabers and Sith lords – a scary thought for some! We’ve played about four and a half hours Star Wars Outlaws and can confirm it’s shaping up to be a hit. While we’re yet to understand the full story and scope of the game, our experience puts this in prime position to be one of the best action-adventure open world games in years.

Outlaws sees you take control of scoundrel Kay Vess alongside her cute companion Nix on a new adventure, set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. As you explore various planets, cities and cantinas, you’ll need to fight, thieve and outsmart your way into the good graces of various crime syndicates.
