PlayStation Showcase | Four first-party games coming to PS5

The PlayStation Showcase was a bit light on first party content, many were expecting to finally see Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us multiplayer game.

Alas, it wasn’t to be.

Instead, we got a showing of four new first-party games, the main attraction of course being the massive Spider-Man 2 gameplay trailer. The other three reveals were from never before seen titles, but were all short CGI trailers which don’t give a very clear picture of the eventual game.

Interestingly they were all multiplayer games coming to both PS5 and PC. We’re finally starting to the fruits of PlayStation’s multiplayer investments.

The Games

Spider-Man 2 – Insomniac Games

The big one, the crown jewel, the pièce de résistance!

Spider-Man 2 capped off the showcase, but of course, we gotta give it top billing here!

The gameplay trailer is filled with jaw-dropping action and teases a dark path for our old mate Pete. The seamless switching between Miles and Peter as dictated by the story is an exciting aspect, I can’t wait to see how the Venom suit controls compared to Miles.

We get a look at new ‘Web Wings’ helping you zip through New York faster than ever, and a bunch of new gadgets and abilities for our heroes.

Spider-Man 2 will launch later this year sometime between September and December.

Concord – Firewalk Studios

Firewalk, are the latest studio to join the PlayStation family, just last month in fact! So I was pleasantly surprised to see their game pop up here.

With former Bungie, Respawn and Raven Software developers making up the team, it’s no shock that their new game Concord is a PVP multiplayer first-person shooter.

The CG teaser doesn’t reveal much, it shows a very lived-in spacecraft zipping through the universe. We do hear someone say “Contract site coming up” and “Freegunners, here we go” which suggests ‘mercenaries’ to me.
We don’t know much more than that, only that it’ll feature a unique universe of vibrant worlds and have a rich cast of colorful characters.

Concord is set to release in 2024 for PS5 and PC.

Fairgame$ – Haven Studios

Competitive multiplayer heist game, Fairgames$ got a CG trailer with a snappy hip-hop soundtrack.

As somewhat of a modern-day Robin Hood, you and your team will be breaking into forbidden locations, outsmarting high-tech security and taking the rich fat cats for all they’re worth, the catch, is you’ll be up against other player-controlled teams too.

It sounds a LOT like Creative Assembly’s Hyenas if I’m being honest, though I’m sure they’ll differentiate themselves as we learn more.

Fairgame$ doesn’t have a date yet but will be coming to PS5 and PC.

Marathon – Bungie

Marathon is a new Sci-Fi PvP extraction shooter with a trippy cyberpunk aesthetic.
Players will and duke it out as cybernetic mercenaries known as Runners while exploring a lost colony on the planet Tau Ceti IV. The shooter is PvP-focused and won’t have a single-player campaign.

But Bungie has described their vision for player-driven stories, that feed into the overarching game narrative.

Player actions will have ramifications for both the game world and other players with each unfolding season.

For example, a crew discovering an artifact for the first time ever could open a new area of the map that all players can explore.

Bungie made a trio of Marathon games back in the 90s so it’s interesting they’re reviving their own old IP. The newest iteration will honor the mythology, story, and themes of the older games but won’t be a direct sequel.

Marathon doesn’t have a date yet but will release for PS5 and PC with full cross-play and cross-saves.

Destiny 2 The Final Shape – Bungie

We also got a trailer for ‘The Final Shape, the last chapter of the Light & Darkness Saga in Destiny 2. Sharp-eared fans will hear the voice of Nathan Fillion, reprising his role as Cayde-6.

We’ll get more details on August 22 in Bungie’s Destiny 2 Showcase event.
