Quest Daily’s PAX Survival Guide

Picture this; the weekend is upon you, your feet hurt, it’s hot and your cosplay has taken a beating from the passing PAX crowd. You wish you were a little more prepared for what PAX has thrown at you.

Well, thankfully after you read this you will be super prepared for PAX Aus, and leave the weekend having had the best time.

Book ahead

PAX is the expo of the country, and so thousands of people attend each year. Many expo goers have travelled far and wide to get to PAX Aus, so accommodation is at a premium.

If you need to stay in Melbourne make sure to book as soon as possible, as the majority of hotels and Airbnbs get snapped up fast. Also, it can’t hurt to book your restaurants ahead of time too. Melbourne is a bustling place for dinner, and around the expo are heaps of decent bars and restaurants locals dine at.

To avoid having to pay $20 for a Sprite and chips at the expo, reserve a table for lunch or dinner at one of the surrounding places. Coordinate with your crew on what cuisine you’d like best.

Scheduling the Fun

There are lots of panels, meet-ups, tournaments and more, so plotting out what you want to attend throughout the weekend will be key to seeing everything.

Look at the PAX website the week before to note where you want to be at what time – you can also download the PAX app to see everything in one place. If you want to take the next step, set alarms on your phone so you don’t miss the timing of these events.

PAX Fashion

Let’s talk the drip.

Outfit choice is totally up to you whether you want to cosplay, dress up or simply go casual. However you want to play it, a change of shirt can never go astray. It can get warm in the expo and if you’re rocking that sweet cosplay you’ve been working on for months, you may want a break to take a breath outside.

Comfy shoes are a big must, as you put in a tonne of steps to get from the arena to the shopping district, to lunch to the theatre rooms. You’d hate to be blistered up before you’ve taken in all the good stuff. Other than that, it’s a good idea to chuck in your bag bandaids, deodorant (very important), cash and a phone charger to be properly prepared for the day.

Meet up spot

If you’re hanging with friends at PAX, there’s undoubtedly going to be times when you can’t find each other. Phones run out of juice from all the photos and videos taken that day so pick a place at the start of the day to have a meet-up spot. This is also handy if everyone’s phones are working, a quick message can mean everyone can be on the same page and reunited in no time.

Another tip is to pack a portable battery charger – with the number of pictures and social media content you’ll be snapping, you don’t want to get caught out with a flat battery.
