With the release of Donkey Kong Country Returns HD on the Nintendo Switch, this classic adventure gets a vibrant new coat of paint, while the gameplay feels as challenging and rewarding as ever. From visually stunning backdrops to exhilarating platforming sequences here’s a look at four of my favourite levels from Donkey Kong Country Returns and one that nearly had me flinging bananas at my TV screen.

Level 1-1 Jungle Jinx

The opening level of Donkey Kong Country Returns HD sets the stage for DK’s triumphant comeback in all his banana-loving glory. The jungle has never looked better, with upgraded vibrant HD visuals every vine, tree, and banana pops like never before. The original and iconic, toe-tapping jungle soundtrack truly steals the show, it’s guaranteed to put a smile on any DK devotee’s face.

Jungle Jinx is a nostalgic first level in DKCR HD, it’s looking good too!

From pounding the ground with your strong arms to huffing and puffing on dandelions for hidden rewards, this first level is a nostalgic joyride that sets the tone for the classic adventure ahead. There’s no monkeying around here, every nook and cranny is packed with treasures and bonuses just waiting to be discovered. So swing into action, go bananas, and explore to your heart’s content!

Level 1-4 Sunset Shore

Sunset Shore is a standout level that swaps the bright greens of the jungle for the warm hues of sunset. DK and Diddy take on a shadowy silhouette as they traverse the stage, with rays of golden light peeking dramatically through the platforms. The atmosphere is pure magic, giving the sense that you’re swinging through the jungle at dusk. This unique art style isn’t the only thing that stands out, the gameplay is top tier too.

Sunset Shore got a real glow up in the HD version

Adding to the vibe is another jazzy, classic tune that perfectly matches the laid-back, end-of-day feel. It’s the kind of track that had me bopping along as I leapt on shadowy enemies and uncovered puzzle pieces. Keep your eyes peeled when foes seem to walk straight through walls, it’s your cue to follow suit and uncover hidden treasures. Don’t be afraid to go a little ape here; the rewards are worth it!

Level 3-6 Temple Topple

Rambi the Rhino makes his long-awaited return here and this level is a prime example of why buddy animals are a beloved staple of the Donkey Kong series. Tough as a boulder and ready to ram, he tears through baddies and bricks with ease, adding a stampede of excitement to the gameplay. As columns tumble and floors crumble around you, Rambi keeps charging ahead like the true king of the jungle.

The sun rays are missing from the HD version of DKC Returns

It’s almost hard to take in the gorgeous temple surroundings with the constant chaos of crashing walls and falling debris, but that’s all part of the thrill. Meanwhile, the traditional temple DK tune plays throughout the level, sparking a sense of nostalgia that’ll warm any Kong fan’s heart.

Don’t forget that Rambi can break lanterns and crush flowers by pressing Y, L, or R. Those sweet collectibles won’t collect themselves. So go ahead, unleash your inner beast, and ram your way to victory!

Level 5-1 Vine Valley

Donkey Kong Country is all about swinging through the jungle, and this level captures that essence perfectly. Grab a vine and let the momentum carry you as you leap and swing your way through the lush treetops. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of soaring from vine to vine, wind rustling through DK’s fur as you time each jump just right. It’s a barrel of fun from start to finish!

The visuals in this level are truly impressive. Sunlight filters through the gaps in the jungle canopy, creating a stunning interplay of light and shadow enhancing the atmosphere. The detailed backgrounds and vividly designed enemies make the stage as visually captivating as it is enjoyable to play.

Hanging on for dear life!

And, of course, no vine-swinging level would be complete without the classic DK jungle groove. The timeless tune sets the perfect mood, making every swing feel even more exhilarating. Be sure to ride the vines from top to bottom to scoop up all the bananas to uncover some of the stage’s cheekily hidden collectibles.

Minecart levels, either you love them or you hate them. Donkey Kong Country Returns HD has some of the most challenging ones I’ve encountered, these levels take no prisoners. The stakes are high, one wrong move, and it’s an instant death. The real frustration in this level lies in how quickly things shift, demanding perfect timing and precision with every jump. After 20 lives and some serious perseverance, I finally conquered it. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

The number of times that I died in this level had me thumping my chest in rage!

Visually, this level dazzles with the HD overhaul. There’s a lot happening: enemies on the tracks, lightning-fast pacing, all while the world around you crumbles as you race to stay alive. Then the classic minecart music kicks in, instantly bringing back that rush of anticipation and terror I felt in the original DKC games.

The moles even target you with their bombs, there was no hope here!

The key to overcoming this challenge is taking a moment to assess each section of the track each time you restart. Think about the obstacles ahead and how you can approach them. Your jump mechanics play a huge role — it’s all about timing. Should you begin your jump earlier to clear that gap? Or adjust the duration of your jump to perfect your landing? Keep focused, and may the Kong-force be with you!

And there you have it, my top levels in Donkey Kong Country Returns HD. The relentless challenge of this game kept me hooked, even when those deceptively adorable moles bombed my minecart into oblivion over and over again. Now, it’s time to go back and tackle the game’s Mirror Mode for an even tougher test of my skills. No monkey business this time, just pure determination!

Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is available now on Nintendo Switch for $79.95.
