Baldur’s Gate 3 – The Squirrel Crusade

When Baldur’s Gate 3 dropped onto PC last month, social media was awash with funny and shocking clips. The most viral seemed to be THIS encounter with a very aggressive squirrel.

I couldn’t escape them! HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE… They were everywhere!!!

Waiting for BG3 to come to PS5 has been agonising, but one thing I’ve been constantly turning over in my head was the fact that I didn’t want to kick that little acorn-lover.

My entire character build revolved around needing the ‘Speak with animals‘ spell so I could find out what was making the furry fellow so hopping mad. (I ended up rolling a bard FYI.)

After a mind-flaying opening sequence, being set upon by a horde of undead, and defending a settlement from a goblin raiding party; I finally arrived at my destination.

I found the infamous squirrel.

Now, for comparison’s sake, here is a clip of me kicking that squirrel to the curb… For comparison’s sake.

Pretty violent, poor little critter.

Some of your companions might look down on such an act, some more concerned you just ruined a good snack.

But there is a better way. A way that nets you this sweet ‘Hyenas Ear’… Hey, it might prove useful down the road.

With my ‘Speak with animals‘ spell active, I strolled up to the squirrel hoping to avoid violence. The f**ker still bit me — but I kept my cool.

I used my bard’s persuasiveness to question why it was so mad. Turns out we’re just in its territory and they were defending their tree. We reached an agreement, I got my hyena ear, and then left peacefully.

Now you might be thinking, ‘That sounds like the more boring of the two outcomes‘ and yeah sure, maybe you’d be right. But this way got me a hyena ear remember and… Saying it out loud, the squirrel WAS just biting people with no warning… Maybe it did deserve a bit of tough love — be right back.

Yeah, that did feel good. Revenge is a dish best served cold after all.
