Raiden Through The Archives

Developed by retro game revivalists Digital Eclipse, Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection follows the part-documentary, part-games-compilation format they established in the outstanding Atari 50, as well as their Gold Master Series.

You navigate an interactive timeline, chronologically following the development of the Mortal Kombat series through archival material. This includes new interviews, videos from the era and documents including concept art or press releases. As titles release within this historical narrative, you play each game in the context of the unfolding story.

This guy’s a marketing genius.

As a fan of old-school gaming, I find this format utterly enthralling. It lends a understanding and appreciation to these games that you wouldn’t get from just slapping a bunch of ROMs into a menu and calling it a day. By poring over the details of how essentially four guys in their 20s put together one of the most legendary fighting games in history through a mixture of passion, technical expertise and a lack of sleep, it makes playing through the original Mortal Kombat so much more satisfying once you get there.

The games have also been enhanced with a range of quality-of-life features, such as difficulty settings, infinite fatality timers and an on-screen move list, which I quickly found to be essential. You can also play many of the games online. However, you may want to bring some friends on board as I struggled to find a match on PlayStation 5.

The original videos used to create the characters from the first game are a joy to watch.

The games included are:

  • Mortal Kombat (Arcade, SNES, Mega Drive, Game Boy, Game Gear)
  • Mortal Kombat II (Arcade, SNES, Mega Drive, Game Boy, 32X)
  • Mortal Kombat 3 (Arcade, SNES, Mega Drive)
  • Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (Arcade, WaveNet, SNES)
  • Mortal Kombat Trilogy (PS1)
  • Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero (PS1)
  • Mortal Kombat 4 (Arcade)
  • Mortal Kombat: Special Forces (PS1)
  • Mortal Kombat Advance (GBA)
  • Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (GBA)
  • Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition (GBA)

GET OVER HERE!!! (…to play this game because it’s quite good)

Can you name the new characters from Mortal Kombat 4? Then you’re probably somebody who should buy this compilation.

If you’re a Mortal Kombat fanatic, particularly of the earlier entries, this ‘kollection’ is a must-play. You’ll relive your nostalgia with a series that holds up surprisingly well, and the archival material lays out a tale of creativity and inspiration worthy of this storied franchise.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection is available physically and digitally now on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Steam, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.
