Monster Hunter Wilds release date and story trailer showcased at State of Play

Ready your weapons, hunters! Monster Hunter Wilds is due for release on 28th February 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC!

As part of the PlayStation State of Play on Tuesday, we got an extended look at the upcoming journey, filled with monsters, new characters and plenty of little details to chew on.

Story Details

As part of the fourth trailer, we’ve got a new look at some of the story details and people we’ll meet as part of Monster Hunter Wilds. For the uninitiated, the Monster Hunter stories often tell the tale of humans trying to survive amidst giant creatures set on making them dinner.

This time we meet a group of guild members setting up camp in the Scarlet Forest, which was briefly shown in the last trailer. Unsurprisingly, it seems their story revolves around making the region safe for the people on their expedition. This group is known as the Forbidden Lands Expedition Team, led by humans Olivia and Fabius.

Palicoes!

I never doubted for a second that the best feline hunters would be making a return in Wilds. Palicoes are some of the hunting buddies that you train and take with you on hunts when playing solo. In the past, they’ve levelled up and learned new abilities and have their own unique armour and weapon sets, quite like the hunter.

In the new trailer, we see an adorable squadron of these feisty felines defending their dinner against a new enemy – named on the website as a Quematrice. For series veterans, you’ll see some similarities between this rooster-looking wyvern and the series favourite Glavenus. The Monster Hunter website breaks down Quematrice’s flaming attacks and main habitat as the Windward Plains.

Of course, in the trailer, we see the police buddies doing their best to support the hunt with healing abilities and distracting attacks. As yet, we haven’t seen the canine Palamutes, and the previous trailer showed the new Seikret creatures that the player rides into battle. We’ll have to wait and see if Palamutes makes a return.

New Monsters

Alongside these new world details, there are a handful of new monsters to tackle, with two big standouts.

Firstly, the leviathan Uth Duma kicks off the trailer, we see a flooded battlefield and a slew of water-based attacks. The creature design feels very akin to Monster Hunter World’s Namielle, which was a dragon with water attacks and visuals inspired by deep-sea creatures like stingrays and sea jellies.

The White Wraith is mentioned in the trailer, leading up to a battle scene with the Forbidden Lands Expedition. This creature seems to have legends built around it, and a clear history with the characters. On the website the White Wraith is introduced as Arkveld, and is described as having “unique chain-like appendages extending from its wings”.

On the Monster Hunter X page, the team has just updated their profile picture to a stylised icon showing Arkveld, potentially suggesting this is the flagship monster of the new game.
