South of Midnight is a gorgeous game, enticing players to explore every nook and cranny. While the story follows a linear path, wandering off the beaten track is always worth it. Hidden pockets of the world reward curiosity with useful resources. Green health strands extend Hazel’s health bar when collected in sets of three, while blue, turnip-like ‘Floofs’ serve as the currency for upgrading her weaving abilities.

Exploration takes a whimsical turn when Hazel reunites with her childhood doll, Crouton. He’s not exactly the cuddliest companion — more “well-loved” than well-made — but he’s stitched into Hazel’s past. Crouton plays a vital part in this adventure, squeezing into hidden spaces and uncovering Floofs that would otherwise remain concealed.
Tiny But Mighty: Crouton’s Underground Missions
Small in size yet big on courage, Crouton is ready to tackle mini platforming missions underground. Armed with a tiny jump and a determined waddle, his segments are less about flashy acrobatics and more about choosing the right path. The tunnels are dark and full of furry details—rabbits and foxes going about their daily lives add a charming layer to the environment.

You’ll guide Crouton through these underground obstacle courses, dodging spikes and puddles as he squeezes through tight spaces. Keep an eye out for glowing yellow holes or luminous sticks blocking your path. This is your signal to send him on daring rescue missions.
Navigating these tunnels isn’t easy, one wrong move can send him tumbling from high ledges or straight into danger. Yet perseverance pays off, as reaching the end of each path rewards Crouton with Floofs that boost Hazel’s total.

Beyond treasure hunting, Crouton plays a crucial role in clearing the way for Hazel. In certain areas, he ventures underground to root out the Stigma, using his powers to cleanse the world above. He’s a literal rag doll in the best (and worst) ways—capable of being hurled across gaps to reach distant platforms or even sacrificed to blast stubborn mushrooms. No matter how many times he’s thrown, squashed, or sent plummeting, he never unravels. What a brave little doll!
The Heartfelt Conclusion: A Hug for a Hero
Crouton’s side adventures aren’t just fun detours; they’re key to upgrading Hazel’s skills and inject a refreshing shake-up to exploration. Some tunnels had me spilling my stuffing with all the spikes knocking Crouton about, but every challenge was worth the effort.

After everything this scrappy little companion endures, Hazel surely owes him one big hug —perhaps even a few stitches of heartfelt appreciation.
South of Midnight is available now on Xbox GamePass and PC for $69.95.
