Boo! (But in the scary way, not the disapproving way.)
Horror fans have a bloody epic year ahead on the gaming front, with multiple Resident Evil titles, a flood of horror VR, vampires and zombies galore.
Fans of the gory and gruesome were blessed with Dead Space (remake) in January, a game that received huge praise – but there’s still so much more to come in 2023.
Here’s a look at what horrors are to come across PlayStation 5, PS VR2, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC:
RESIDENT EVIL: VILLAGE (VR)
Originally releasing in May 2021, Resident Evil Village not only has a new DLC – but you can experience it all in stunning 4K VR with the PS VR2.
Resident Evil Village VR is coming on launch day for the PlayStation VR2 (February 22, 2023) – and the best thing about is it’s a free upgrade if you already own the game.
Now you can really look up at Lady Dimitrescu…
You could lay on the floor and try to get her to step on you – whatever you’re into – no judgment.
RESIDENT EVIL 4 (REMAKE)
Sticking with the Resident Evil theme, we’re super pumped for the upcoming remake of Resident Evil 4.
This 2005 classic has been given a total overhaul. Graphics, gameplay – even a reimagined storyline.
Worth noting that a few years ago Resident Evil 4 was given a VR makeover for the Oculus Quest 2, but don’t expect it to pop up on PS VR2 anytime soon.
Resident Evil 4 (Remake) is coming to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and PC on March 28.
SWITCHBACK VR
Switchback VR is an all-new spinoff from The Dark Pictures anthology that sends players riding along a horror-themed roller coaster.
Created by Supermassive Games, Switchback VR is launching exclusively for the PlayStation VR2 on March 16.
AMNESIA: THE BUNKER
Horror fans know Amnesia. It was once labeled among the scariest video games of its time.
Now we’re getting an all-new game, Amnesia: The Bunker, set in World War I.
This game is seemingly not getting a specific PS5 release, but it’s coming to PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC on May 16.
DEAD ISLAND 2
There’s no doubt Dead Island 2 is horror-lite compared to other games on this list, but who is to say Zombies aren’t scary anymore?
Dead Island 2 has been a long time coming, the first game released in 2011.
This time players are able to explore a sunny, zombie-ridden Los Angeles.
Recently going gold, Dead Island 2 is coming to PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, and PC on April 21.
REDFALL
While Redfall isn’t exactly penned as a “horror” game, it’s oozing blood-sucking goodness.
Described as an open-world shooter, Redfall sees the player, or a co-op team of up to four people, take on terrifying vampires and their loyal followers across the town of Redfall.
Created by Arkane Austin, the same team behind Prey and Dishonoured, it’s almost guaranteed to be a hit.
Redfall is coming to Xbox Series X|S and PC on May 2, 2023.
ALONE IN THE DARK
In this re-imagination of the 90’s cult classic, Alone in the Dark sees players delve int other stories of two characters and explore Derceto Manor, fight the evils within and solve deadly puzzles.
We played a sequence from the game at PAX AUS 2022 and can confirm it shows a lot of promise.
Alone in the Dark is coming to PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2: HEART OF CHORNOBYL
From the looks of the trailer alone, this game is stunning.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2: Heart of Chernobyl puts the player deep into the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone where they’ll be forced to fight mutated enemies and discover the secrets of a strange anomaly.
It also seems like every choice you make will have ramifications, so be sure to choose your path wisely.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2: Heart of Chernobyl is coming to Xbox Series X|S and PC in December.
ALAN WAKE 2
The sequel to Remedy Entertainment’s award-winning action-thriller, Alan Wake, is on the way.
While its release date hasn’t been confirmed, Alan Wake 2 is set to launch this year for PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE
Based on the 1974 classic cult horror film, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is being brought to life in video game form.
Developed by Gun Interactive, the same team behind Friday the 13th, it’s being labeled as more of a “horror experience”.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is releasing in 2023.
SILENT HILL 2 (REMAKE)
A game that needs no introduction, Silent Hill 2 is in development and releasing this year.
Said to be a “faithful” remake of the original, players can expect a nostalgia overload among updated graphics and gameplay.
