I had the privilege of sitting down with Remi Ercolani, the director of TopSpin 2K25, to delve into the intricacies of its creation and what players can expect from this latest chapter in the franchise.

From Mafia to TopSpin, it’s quite a diverse portfolio! How are you feeling about taking on the tennis world once again?

“We’re super excited! It has been over a decade since the release of Top Spin 4 so the return of the franchise is hugely exciting for me and our team. We also have a few Top Spin veterans in the team, who worked on previous iterations of the franchise, and like the rest of the team they were really enthusiastic at the idea of bringing TopSpin back to the amazing community of TopSpin fans around the world.”

TopSpin 2K25 features the Australian Open as one of the licensed tournaments. How did the team ensure the authenticity of the tournament and its iconic venues like Rod Laver Arena?

“The Australian Open is one of the most beloved tournaments in the calendar, so much so that it’s referred to as the Happy Slam. We’re very grateful to have the opportunity to bring this great tournament and its iconic stadium, the Rod Laver Arena, to TopSpin 2K25. We worked closely with the representatives of the tournament and collected a lot of detailed references of the venue itself, but also its famous tunnel, the Walk of Champions, which you can see in the game during the match introduction. We’re really trying to bring all the details that make this venue so unique and special, and we think players will love playing and taking part in epic battles on Rod Laver Arena. Also, like all our outdoor venues in the game, you’ll get to play during the afternoon, sunset or night, each bringing a completely different vibe and atmosphere to every match.”

Were there any specific challenges or surprises during the process of recreating the Australian Open experience in the game?

“Getting every detail of the court and its surroundings right is definitely a long process that requires a lot of care and attention. So was creating the different lighting conditions for the different times of day (afternoon, sunset, night), for which we used a lot of video references to make sure it looked and felt like you’re watching the Australian Open on TV. But seeing the progress every week and month during that process was something the team absolutely enjoyed.”

Tennis is such a global game, so how do you ensure a well-rounded experience for players around the world, including Australia, in terms of representing different cultures and tennis styles?

“We made a conscious effort to include a diverse group of pros, past and present, many of whom include unique animations and playstyles designed to mimic their real-life performance. We’ve also offered players the opportunity to design their own MyPLAYER with a host of customization options, including appearance, nationality, apparel, play style, animations, voices and more.”

How important has community feedback been during the development of TopSpin 2K25?

“We’re always listening to the community and working to ensure we meet their needs and requests where possible. That’s true of our community all around the world.”

A few notable champions are absent from the launch lineup, when can we expect new players to be added?

“Our goal was to build a well-rounded roster of the greatest pros available to us, past and present. We’re very happy with our roster and we believe players will be too. We will be adding more pros to the game and these will be free to all players – more to come!”

How do you rally all of these tennis stars to include them in the game? Timings and schedules must be tough to knuckle down!

“Yes, tennis pros have crazy busy schedules and are always traveling, but we were able to secure time with our legendary cover stars Serena Williams and Roger Federer to do motion capture which was amazing.

You can see more of that here:

Our time with John McEnroe was great too, he voices our TopSpin Academy, taking players through their paces to learn all about the game.

Working around the schedule of these amazing athletes is definitely a challenge, but all of them are truly excited to be part of the project and to be able to see or play themselves in the game. They did provide feedback every step of the way to make sure the way they were represented in the game was as close as possible to reality.”

How does the game facilitate competitive play and online matchmaking for players who want to test their skills against others?

“TopSpin 2K25 includes 3 online game modes at launch: World Tour allows you to take your custom MyPLAYER and compete in weekly tournaments against other players. In 2K Tour, you can play matches as your favorite pro player and challenge other pros. And Online Exhibition offers the ability to play friendly matches as either a MyPLAYER or a pro.

All game modes use a matchmaking system to help you find opponents of similar skill level, to make sure all matches are fun and enjoyable for everyone (online access required for matchmaking).”
