2023 has been packed with stellar video games! It has to be in the running for one of the greatest years of all time. That said, it makes picking a top 5 list and crowning a game of the year incredibly tough.
We’ve made our lists, checked them twice, and now it’s time to find out which games have been extra nice!
#5 – Hogwarts Legacy
Review | Hogwarts Legacy, ‘a Firebolt of action and adventure’ (PS5): Quest Daily’s Game of the Year 2023“The Wizarding World is very special to me. Playing this game returned me back to my childhood in the best way possible.”
Rhiannen
“This is the Harry Potter game we’ve been asking for! Exploring Hogwarts and learning spells, I feel like I’m living my childhood dream of being a wizard!”
Alex
“C’mon, it’s Harry Potter, and you could use unforgivable curses. Nuff said.”
Mark
#4 – Super Mario Bros. Wonder
Review | Super Mario Bros. Wonder (Switch): Quest Daily’s Game of the Year 2023“It’s all in the name… Wonder! This game is magic, vibrant, and loads of fun!”
Alex
“Its charming art style, nostalgic nods, and perfect blend of gameplay makes for a delightful and enjoyable experience for all ages.”
Elly
“Beating your children is usually frowned upon, but not in Mario! It was a laugh-out-loud time with so many cool new additions to the Super Mario Bros. world.”
Rhiannen
“The best 2D Mario of all time in my book, solo or with family and friends.”
Santo
#3 – The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Review | The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom: Quest Daily’s Game of the Year 2023“I love the idea of a Where Are They Now interactive story that allows me to see the fruits of my labor from the first game. The nostalgia for a world that isn’t even that old hit me hard.”
Rose
“For turning wandering into wonder and making exploration excellent, Tears of the Kingdom proved to be an outstanding and worthy follow-up for the legendary Zelda series.”
Rivers
“TOTK is better than BOTW in every way, but a recycled map struggled to inspire the same sense of discovery.”
Santo
#2 – Baldur’s Gate III
Why Baldur’s Gate 3 is a shoo-in: Quest Daily’s Game of the Year 2023“The freedom and depth it offers within character creation, exploration and interactivity is on a level I’ve never experienced before. The way Larian Studios present the mind boggling amount of choices, in a very digestible way, is extraordinary.”
Shaun
“With hours and hours of content this game never gets stale! I have four different characters and I find something new in every playthrough. I can’t get enough of it!”
Alex
“Baldur’s Gate III opened my eyes to a world I’d never really considered. D&D felt so far out of reach, but BG3 has invited players in on their own terms.”
Julian
“It was incredibly engaging and challenging. I loved the way it brought together the community as well.”
Rhiannen
#1 – Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
Review | Spider-Man 2 (PS5): Quest Daily’s Game of the Year 2023“You’d think it’d be an impossible to feat to create the best superhero game of all time, but Insomniac Games has done it… Twice. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 offers deep story, ruthless action and combat and traversal mechanics. Never have I felt more heroic while playing a video game.”
Julian
“A captivating narrative that left me in tears on multiple occasions, stunning graphics, seamless open-world design with plenty of hidden surprises, and innovative gameplay mechanics. The improvements from the last game are obvious.”
Elly
“Spider-Man 2 is a masterclass in cinematic storytelling. Playing as Venom was amazing but I wish there was more to do in parts of the open world.”
Santo
“Insomniac continue to cement themselves as the most consistently excellent studio around. SM2 has incredible action sequences, greatly enhanced traversal mechanics, and Yuri Lowenthal’s performance as Peter Parker was a rollercoaster of emotions.”
Shaun
“The action-packed series continues to deliver, with an amazing storyline and creative combat, just like the first game”
Alex
A BIG congratulations to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2! In a year with so many stars, SM2 shone the brightest amongst our team.
How we voted
Each of our crew picked their top 5 games for the year, ranking them from 1 to 5. Each ranking holds a points value:
- #1 = 5 points
- #2 = 4 points
- #3 = 3 points
- #4 = 2 points
- #5 = 1 point
We tallied all the votes, did all the math, and the games with the highest points total made up our top 5. Pretty simple stuff.
