He’s more than just a bony guy with some shiny eyes; Manfred is one of the best characters in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
Though not a main companion, Manfred brings his own quirky charm to the team. Born into existence by Emmrich Volkarin, this “living” skeleton is the perfect comic relief, often responding with a simple hiss.

Manfred’s story is worth uncovering — you’ll find plenty of dialogue that invites his strange but endearing sounds.
Where to meet Manfred
When you first travel to the Necropolis to meet Emmrich, you’ll also meet the lovable bony butler. After completing Emmrich’s introductory quest, you’ll be able to invite Emmrich and Manfred back to the Lighthouse.
Where to find Manfred at The Lighthouse
Between quests, Manfred can be found wandering around he Lighthouse. He’s usually in Emmrich’s room, but you can also catch him on the external balcony — getting some fresh air? Or perhaps he is just lost…

Interacting with Manfred here initiates a game of rock-paper-scissors — the last thing I expected. Needless to say, Manfred became my ultimate wingman; I used Manfred to help decide who I should choose for my exclusive romantic relationship (thanks, skele-bro).
Can you romance Manfred?

No, you can’t bone him — don’t even try. LEAVE HIM ALONE. He’s a precious boy that needs to be kept safe. You can, however, romance Emmrich but that’s as close as you’re getting.
What’s Manfred’s story?
Without delving too deep, Manfred is basically a lost wisp, a spirit, who Emmrich captured and placed into the human bones (from various people). Once a human with a story, Manfred is now limited to doing Emmrich’s bidding — but he seems to like it. The game questions whether any part of Manfred’s original mind is left, but leaves it up to the player to decide.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is out now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
